Chapter 9: Okay, He's a Trouble Magnet

      It's been two days since finding my soulmate and I haven't slept. I feel like I've been running non-stop, chasing after every lead I can find about DemGen, Corp., the dead shifter and his energy sphere, or something that links these recent incidents together. Also, I've been keeping guard over my—, over the doctor, Alex.

      His presence at the morgue that night had been coincidental. He'd been a convenient tool for those demons to use, but I know those demons went there on orders. So, someone is probably wondering where they went and will investigate. I won't let anyone get that close to him again.

      I haven't found anything more about DemGen, nor the unknown demonic presence I felt that night. The helicopter was rented out to a fake name with a fake flight plan, leading to a dead end. I know that I'll have to get inside the corporation, but Owen is still reverse-engineering the device found on the demons.

     He says it's an amazing mix of technology and magic and he's been working over it every chance he has. Owen thinks that once we know how it works, we'll be able to get into DemGen's blocked system. For now, I'll wait until he has more information, giving us our best chance inside the mysterious place.

      Owen spent hours after we got home from the morgue, after hacking the hospital's system, deleting and editing security cameras and records. He copied the records on the John Doe, for us to investigate. Due to the damage left at the morgue, and the "missing" body, Owen had instructed Alex to report that when the doctor came back from his break, he found the morgue like that. It wasn't ideal, but with the hospital experiencing an hour long black out on their camera footage, it was plausible.

      I've already looked into where the shifter was found, at a public park in the early morning hours. From what is known, the authorities assumed he was going on a late-night stroll and had a heart attack. Now, with the body gone, it is more suspicious, and being investigated further. Considering how much trouble we're having investigating, we know the police won't find out anything. I trust Owen's expertise to keep us from being exposed at the morgue.

      I went around, interviewing every supernatural in the neighborhoods surrounding the park, about the shifter's possible identity but came up empty. Our next avenue to look into is trying to find the demon that the energy sphere belongs to. Bowden says that they are pretty specific, being an item that is very rare and specially made.

      I am trying to convince Owen to let me ask Bowden to take it and investigate it throughout the demon world to see if anyone recognizes it, but he says he doesn't feel comfortable with that but won't explain further. I'm think that means he doesn't trust Bowden with something so evil.

      It was extremely awkward when my brother first shackled Bowden, and Owen would rather have never seen the demon than deal with him. However, since the effects of the bracelet forced them together, Owen used his power as the owner of the bracelet for one thing. He made Bowden swear not to commit any evil crimes and the demon has been very well behaved since then. Maybe Owen thinks that Bowden won't be able to help himself use the sphere to gain more energy for himself.

      Since tracking the two demons led us to DemGen Corp, which led us to a body at the morgue, which led to a filled energy sphere, I can't help but feel that everything that has been happening lately is related. The demon I obliterated almost a week ago fits the profile of the other three. Also, Dylan's father had known about danger to the lower-level halflings. Not to mention one vampire that's been attacked as well as a family of vamps that disappeared. My gut tells me that DemGen is at the center of something big targeting lower energy beings. I just don't know how big it goes.
