"I told you, I don't need someone to keep me on a leash. I am not a mental patient." I yelled at Ruby and the man who stood beside her.
He was tall, probably in his mid-30s. He had deep green eyes and was muscular like an army person, he stood almost a foot taller than Ruby. Charlie didn't come this time. She already hinted that yesterday when she said, meet you at school. I don't get why I need someone to keep me on a leash, I promised them that I won't reveal their secret. This isn't the 15th century; people have more open mindsets now. Therefore, even if I did reveal their secrets, people would love them for what they are. Maybe they would even be celebrities.
"This is Zoe. He is our uncle. He takes care of us when our parents aren't home. He would do the same for you when we aren't around" Ruby replied calmly.
I chuckled and replied, "Zoe? Isn't Zoe a girls' name?"
"An adult following me everywhere is embarrassing enough. A girls' name is just adding oil to the fire" I added nonchalantly.
"You aren't in a position to complain" Ruby yelled.
"Well, I am aware of that. I have been alone in this place all night, I didn't even have dinner. Now you are treating me like a prisoner and allotting me a prison guard. I thought we had a deal. I thought I got a say in things too. Why am I still in here?" I snapped but then I felt tears burning through the side of my cheek.
I tried to control it so I wouldn't look weak. But I couldn't. I can't help but think how devastated my parents would be. They are probably worried sick. I never behave like this.
"What did you say to my parents?" I asked her.
"I didn't say anything. Charlie did all the talking. I assure you, they seemed pretty convinced" Ruby replied calmly.
Ruby shoved a bunch of clothes on a table that sat beside the dusty bed and added, "Get dressed. We will meet at school. You can eat something when you get there. Don't be late."
Getting out of this place was enough for me for now. But I didn't show it on my face. Both of them retreated and left me alone to get ready.
I wore the solid black t-shirt and blue jeans that she got for me. Surprisingly, they were exactly my size. I yelled, "I am ready" and the huge creaky door opened as Zoe came in. The man spoke with an accent, Europian, I suppose. I couldn't exactly figure out which country he was from.
"We have to hurry, Ruby wants us to meet her in 10 minutes," he said.
I rolled my eyes and replied, "I don't get why they are doing this to me. I told them I won't expose their secret but...Wait, are you like them too?"
"I am, of course." He replied.
I let out a sigh, "Great. Let's leave or her majesty would be furious".
Zoe's eyes widened, "How do you know about her?".
"Are you kidding me? Ruby isn't really a stranger. Not anymore." I replied.
An expression of relief could clearly be seen on Zoe's face, "Oh, you mean Ruby. I thought you meant the..." He cleared his throat, "Never mind. Let's go. Her majesty really would be furious" he said and we both giggled at that.
At least Zoe isn't a psychopath manic like Ruby, I would live with that. Zoe lead me out the dungeon. I felt the warm rays of the sun waking me up on the inside. He leads me to the garage and to my surprise, there was a lot of cars. Luxurious to simple, expensive to economic, everything. I wasn't a car nerd so I didn't know the names of most of the cars, my sister would've loved this place.
"Um.... Are you guys....rich?" I asked hesitantly.
"You've got no idea" Zoe replied.
"We will take this one today," Zoe said pointing to an SUV. "Or would you prefer the sedan?"
Wait a second...I am confused. Ruby treats me like a prisoner, a dog. But this guy treats me like I am some sort of princess. Who am I? I think I am starting to lose my mind. Maybe this is a nightmare, maybe I just have to wake up. I pinched myself just to be sure. Ouch!!! This isn't a dream.
"Anything. We've got to meet Ruby and Charlie soon. We better hurry up." I said. I feel like I could trust Zoe. For some weird reason, he reminds of my uncle.
We reached school in the sedan that Zoe picked out. Zoe extended a piece of paper with a number on it. "Well, here's my number if you ever need it. Don't worry I won't follow you in the school." He said. "But the minute you come out...." I cut him off with, "I know" and a dramatic eye roll. I shoved the piece of paper into my backpack.
I got out of the sedan and walked towards the entrance. I got to the lockers and Ruby stood there glaring at me. I ignored her glare and went to my locker.
Charlie flashed a welcoming smile, standing beside my locker. "I am sorry for what we did to you yesterday." Charlie apologized. I ignored her but she kept talking, "Okay, I see you are angry. But we did it for a reason. We thought you.....might be a werewolf too".
"What?!" I yelled. "Am I?" I asked in confusion.
"No. But you are something. We haven't figured it out yet. We had a hunch when you told us that you overheard us yelling. You see, some werewolves have special powers. Like Ruby, for example, she can send a message through her mind and only the person that she wants to know the information gets to know it. Kate, we weren't yelling at my house. Ruby sent me a message through her mind. We have no idea how you heard it." Charlie replied.
