I put the food and supplies in my other bag and watched Ninten pace back and forth. I felt my heart sink,”Ninten.” I said. He stopped and looked at me,”Yeah?”
“I can see you're worried...I think you should stay here.” he looked at me with wide eyes,”What? No! I'm not letting you go by yourself.” he said. I let out a pained sigh,”I don't want you to get hurt because of me.” I replied.
Ninten walked to me putting his hands on my shoulders,”Claus, I'm not going anywhere.” he asserted. I frowned looking back at him when he put his hand on my cheek,”Stop worrying okay, we'll be fine.” he said,”Here, wear this.” he placed his cap on my head and brushed the hair out of my face with his hands.
“Take your jacket off and put it in your bag.” I did as told. He stared at me for a bit before nodding,”It'll do for now, we're gonna make a beeline to the gate.” he instructed. I hummed in confirmation and we made our way out of the alleyway.
I followed Ninten closely as we went through the marketplace. I felt a jolt of fear in my body when Ninten stiffened his movements,”What's wrong?” I whispered. Ninten didn't say a word instead he led mm closer to the gate but at a slower pace. We reached the gate and I looked back and a wave of dread washed over me. Soldiers. Five of them and they were showing posters to the civilians.
We fled and I've never felt so scared,”They're in the town.” I breathed heavily feeling every decision I've made crash down on me. Ninten tried to calm me down but I couldn't hear him, I was too worried about what was gonna happen. I barely noticed that we started moving again.
My body was on autopilot while I fought with my mind. It was a little later when I snapped back into reality,”Claus, are you alright?” Ninten asked hovering over me. We were on the ground beside a half built wooden house. “Y-Yeah.” I said as my heart slowed.
He looked relieved,”Good, I was worried.” he said laughing a little,”So what did you buy?” he asked curiously. “Just some foods and some medical stuff like bandages.”
“That's good.”
“You hungry?”
“I can wait. How did you buy all this anyways?” I pulled a card out of my pocket,”My ComCard, it's got a lotta cash on it for when I need things.” I explained. Ninten nodded and leaned back beside me,”We need to keep going tomorrow.” he sighed,”It's too dark to go out now.” It is dark...where did the time go. “Wanna go in there?” I asked gesturing towards the house.
“Sure.” we both got up looking for the door. Locked. Eventually Ninten found a hole that he and I could wriggle through. I hauled myself up to see Ninten looking around. The house had four rooms. A bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, and living room. So it was kinda small. I set my bag down and looked for something we could sleep on... Bingo. I found some cushion covers wrapped up in plastic. I unraveled them, they were clean. Good. I set them out on the floor an waited for Ninten to join me.
“There's a bunch of papers tacked to the bedroom wall. But I can't read it in the dark. He said sitting next to me. “We'll read it in the morning.” I yawned. “You're tired too? Good.” Ninten mumbled a little sleepily.
I nodded and laid down holding my arms vertically in the air,”Cuddle me.” I demanded groggily like a child. Ninten snickered a little before complying and wrapping his small arms around me. I closed my eyes slowly hearing nothing but the steady sound of light breathing beside me…
When I woke up Ninten wasn't beside me, instead he was walking around the house. I yawned loudly and he came into the room I was in,”Good you're awake, I gotta show you something.” he said in an urging tone. I nodded standing up and following him tiredly. He showed me to the bed room which had been covered wall to wall with papers. Ninten pointed one out to me,”Look, this is from three years ago.” he said, it was a news article about the progress of the Pigmask Army. I read it around and he nodded. Where they in a war? Who knows.
Ninten showed me a few more papers about progress before he showed me some blueprints and some notes. “Um...I can't really read well, can you?”
I nodded and read them to him,”Operation Sunflowers.” I stated before continuing,”Is a project proposed by our Empire that will go into effect shortly after me writing this. Whoever finds this, do not fear them. You have the power to stop this. You will travel in my given directions so that you can find the Barrier.” the note ended there.
“What's the Barrier?” Ninten asked. I shrugged picking up another note.
“The Barrier is a giant wall of some sort that will block the entire Empire inside, but that thing is nobody is supposed to know. The Empire wants to keep us trapped and dirty our air so that we fear them and depend on them.”
We were both quiet as I picked up another
"The borders are set, it will take all cities in the Empire's range save for Podunk and Ma gi cant. Go there and help the people under the ….” it was ineligible after that. I picked up the last paper,”A map.”
I said handing it to him so he could hold onto it. Ninten looked exited,”I told you it wasn't gone!” he squealed. I chuckled,”Yeah but we've got a lot to go through before we get there.” I said. “Let's get my bag and head out.” I picked up my bag slinging it around my shoulder. Ninten smiled at me still holding the map. “Let's go.” I said.
Suddenly there was a loud crash. The door. I snapped my vision beside me to see the soldiers barging in. “Run!” I hissed to Ninten. He let out a loud noise which honesty helped because they slowed down as we slipped out of the hold in the wall. I let out a yelp feeling the back of my collar be gripped by a strong hand.
I turned quickly,”Commander Claus, you must return to Master Porky immediately.” their voice sounded cold and robotic. I gave out a scream before violently thrashing in his grip,”Leave. Me. Alone!” I growled. He wouldn't let go. “Let him go!” a voice shrieked from behind me, Ninten.
He quickly struck the soldier across the face with a tree branch causing him to fall over sparks flying from his body. My chest heaved and I looked at Ninten who helped me up,”We're not done.” he wheezed.
I nodded before two more of them burst from the bushes. This time I was ready raising my foot up and jamming it down as hard as I could. He was out, man was that satisfaction? Ninten had taken care of two others while I wasn't looking.
Damn. He wiped his forehead and smiled,”This was not good for my body.” he chuckled his voice hoarse,”Don't worry it'll go away soon.” he chimed.
Wait a minute….something didn't feel right like…
“Claus!” Ninten yelled. Strong arms wrapped around my neck at an alarmingly fast pace. I let out a choked gasp gripping the arm and trying to pry it off. It wasn't working. I started coughing as the voice spoke”Commander Claus, you must return.” it said in the same cold unreal voice. My legs felt weak and I looked around for anything that could help me. Ninten… he stood in front of us like a deer under headlights his eyes widened body stiff. “Nin...ten…” I wheezed my eyes darkening with purple splotches. My eyes closed and I felt my body weaken, is this guy gonna kill me? Suddenly the pressure on my neck was gone. My eyes opened slowly a few minutes to see Ninten panting. He looked at me and picked me up best he could, my chest felt crushed. I looked to see the attacker still chasing us this time with firearms. I closed my eyes, Ninten's voice sounded muffled but I did hear one distinctive word,”---Teleport!” his pace quickened and suddenly my body felt lighter than air. I opened my eyes fully and in shock realized we were somewhere else?
