Chapter Four: The Snake Charmer

"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves." -William Shakespeare

-

"Let me get this straight," I say and sit forward in my chair.

"You think I killed my brother, even though I've been locked away in a mental institute for the last six months? You think I crawled from the shadows of that horrible place, got a gun, and shot my brother? Me?" I quirk an eyebrow, sass, and sarcasm dripping from my every word.

"Essentially, yes, that's what we're saying." Sheriff Keller says and I scoff.

"You're unbelievable. Jason was my brother. My best friend. And you think I shot him in the head? You think that I killed my own brother? Someone I loved and only wanted to protect?" I shake my head.

"Protect him? Protect him from what?" He furrows his eyebrows.

"Have you met our parents? They treat Cheryl like she's the evil step-child, they made Jason break up with Polly by threatening Polly, and then, they sent me off to a conversion camp. Of course, I was protective of him. They're monsters, they-" I'm cut off, tears running down my face.

"I loved my brother more than anything. Family comes first. Always." I say, my voice weak.

Sheriff Keller goes to say something else when the door slams open and my parents walk in.

"Not another word. Not without a lawyer present." My mother says, putting a hand on my shoulder harshly, making me flinch.

"Cheri, let's go." She yanks me up and they both grab me by my arms, pulling me out of the room.

It reminded me of that night.

I needed to get away from them.

I look around for anyone I trusted as they pulled me towards the doors of the school.

I spot Maeve, Betty, Veronica, and the rest of the gang.

"Maeve! Help me please!" I yell and she runs towards us, stepping in front of my parents.

"Mrs. Blossom, if I may," Maeve starts, but my mom stops her.

"Little girl, I would not get in the way of things you do not understand." She smiles sarcastically.

"Okay, I tried to be nice about this, but no." Maeve laughs dryly.

"Maeve, don't," I say and take a step towards her, but my mother yanks me back by my hair.

"Oh hell no." Maeve shakes her head and yanks me away from my parents, passing me to Veronica and Betty who were standing behind her.

They both held me, making sure I was shielded from my parents.
