Chapter Fourteen: A Powder Keg

"Cynics are simply thwarted romantics." -William Goldman

"My mom and dad don't want to get the police involved. They don't want anyone to know that she ran away, or about her 'shameful condition'." Betty shakes her head as we all sit and talk in the student lounge.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Betty Cooper, but Polly was important to me. Jason loved her. In a way, she was the last reminder of him I had.

"Please, what decade is this?" Veronica scoffs and I chuckle.

"Well, it's the twenty-first century, but to the Coopers' it's still the 1800's." I smile sarcastically and she laughs.

I was sitting in an armchair, Kevin in a similar chair across the table, Betty next to Jughead, Maeve on the armrest of the couch they were sitting on, and Veronica and Archie across from them on another couch.

"Also, since she knew where Jason's getaway car was, they're afraid people might think that she burned it and if she did..." She trails off, wringing her hands nervously.

"She could be the murderer, trying to cover her tracks." Jughead sighs.

"Who did burn the car, then?" Archie furrows his eyebrows.

"Hello, Sherlock, that's what we're trying to figure out." I scoff and glare at him.

"What kind of stupid question is that?" Maeve narrows her eyes at him.

He just rolls his eyes and turns back to Jughead and Betty.

"Sheriff Keller says its possible someone was following us." Betty says, over-dramatic as always.

"Oh my God. Honestly, guys, we should just move." Veronica shakes her head, making me laugh lightly.

"Guys, what if Polly is really hurt? What if whoever killed Jason is coming after her next?" Betty stresses, causing Jughead to put his arm around her in a comforting way.

We all look at them shocked, with wide eyes.

Maeve looks at him and hits his leg with her foot.

He looks at her and she nods, knowing that he was just comforting Betty as a friend.

But I knew Betty. She wouldn't take it that way.

"Betty, even though your parents don't want to, maybe you should go to the police." Archie sighs.

"Second it. We can talk to my dad together about how he has to be discreet." Kevin nods.

"No offense, Kev, but your dad answers to a higher authority than God: the Blossoms. They're the first people that he would tell." Jughead says and I nod.
