Chapter Six: The Tell-Tale Heart

"You're the only girl I've seen for a long time that actually did look like something blooming." -Unknown

-

We pull up to the gates of Thornhill and I look at it in pure horror.

It was the house that scary stories were based on.

Tall, old, always cold, and with its very own graveyard.

Ever since I came back to town, I had zero intent on ever returning to this awful place.

But my sister needed me, so here I was.

Growing up, Cheryl and Jason always sought comfort in me when mom or dad were particularly angry. I often took the blame when one of them was clumsy and broke something or spilled something. I made sure they were taken care of first and foremost, being the older sister.

"I'm so glad to have you back home, Cherry." Cheryl smiles as she pulls into the garage.

"Anything for you." I laugh and step out of the car.

"You may wanna take off your Serpent jacket and hide it in your bag." She sighs.

"A Serpent never sheds its skin." I shake my head and walk inside with her by my side.

"Ah, if it isn't the disgrace to the Blossom name." My mother says as we walk into the parlor and she sees me.

"Well, it's good to have you home. Spending time with that girl, Maeve, isn't good for you. I bet she's the one that made you have all those unholy urges in the first place." She says and I scoff.

"No mom, that was Gal Gadot, nice try though." I smile fakely before turning on my heels and starting to walk up the stairs to my room.

"What in God's name is that jacket?" My father asks as my mom lets out a gasp.

"It's a Serpent jacket." I shrug casually.

"It's a disgrace, just like you!" He yells and I roll my eyes.

"Whatever, asshole," I say as I make my way up the stairs to my room.

I plop my bag down on the floor before jumping into bed and sighing.

I had to admit this bed was extremely comfortable.

I scroll on my phone for hours, waiting for a call or text from FP, but alas, nothing.

I had just changed into my pajamas and was about to get under the covers when a soft knock at my door stops me.

I walk over to the door and open it slightly, before seeing it was Cheryl and opening it all the way.

"Can I sleep in here with you tonight? I had a nightmare. About Jason." She whispers, cheeks wet with tears.

I nod and pull her in gently, hugging her.
