Chapter 7: Two Heartbreaks. Two Songs.

It was the night before he had to go.

Our parents had agreed that I could sleep over.

I was crying in his room. I couldn't help it.

My best friend. Leaving. For goodness know how long.

I secretly hoped he wouldn't make it.

Just so he would have to come back.

But that was selfish. I have to let him go.

It's his dream. It could change his life.

And it could change mine.

He came into the room and sat down beside me.

"Come on now, Annikka. I might not even make it." he said, hugging me.

"But you will!" I cried. "You will, Niall. And when that happens, you'll forget about me."

"Listen to me, Annikka." he said, taking my chin and looking straight into my eyes.

"I will never forget about you. You're my best friend. I'll call you always." he said.

"Promise?" I whispered. "I promise. I'll call as much as I can." he replied.

I lay down to sleep, his arms around me, hugging me tight.

I couldn't sleep. "Niall, sing to me." I whispered.

"What should I sing?" he asked.

"Edelwiess, from Sound of Music." I said.

Though it wasn't an Irish song, It was my favorite.

" Edelweiss, Edelweiss,

Every morning you greet me

Small and white, clean and bright

I looked up at him, he smiled and leaned down. He kissed me.

I didn't know what to say. I snuggled into his chest and closed my eyes.

When I woke up, he was gone.

I cried. I didn't know that the smile I saw last night was the last smile I'd see for a long time.

I looked around the room. There was a note on his desk. I picked it up.

Dear Annikka,

I had to go. Don't worry, I'll always call you.

Be safe. I miss you already.

P.S. you look cute while you're sleeping.

"Annikka? Annikka, wake up!" I heard Jessica say. "Hm? What happened?" I asked, getting up. "You fainted when you saw Niall." she said, grinning. "Oooh, someone still has feelings for a certain One Direction lad!" Beck said, smirking. I glared at him. "Did he look at you?" Sarah asked. "Yeah.... He then he looked surprised, as if he recognized me..." I said, rubbing my eyes. "Is he still there?" I asked. "Uh, no, he walked away with the rest of the lads." Kelly said.
