~Hazel's POV~
Today would be the day where everything would change...
I woke up yet again to my alarm blaring in my face.
BEEP BEEP BE-
I slam it off, groaning.
"Why does school have to exist?" I quite literally roll off of my bed and onto the floor.
"Ughhh." I push myself up and walk lazily to the bathroom.
I do my business and wash my hands then I take a look at myself in the mirror.
"Ew..." I mutter.
My hair is tangled everywhere and there's more than just one drool spot on my shirt.
My face feels weird and has a couple of lines on it from my pillow.
"Why do I have to look like the living dead every morning?" I whine before I wash my face and painfully take out my hair.
I then brush my hair out and immediately put it up into another bun.
I was NOT going to go outside with my hair down.
It looked like a big poofy rats nest so I decided it was better to play it safe.
I also felt REALLY lazy today, so I decided not to put any makeup on. Satisfied with my potato face, I walked back into my room to pull out a pair of comfortable clothes.
I grabbed a pair of sweats, a light t-shirt, and a hoodie.
I throw it all on before putting on some slippers.
I grabbed my phone from off the charger and my backpack from the floor and headed out into the kitchen.
My mom was standing at the stove cooking breakfast.
"Did Dad leave?" I took a seat at the table.
She shook her head. "He'll be coming in shortly."
I nodded and waited.
After about six minutes, my father came into the kitchen.
He walked over to my mother, who was sitting down, and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Hey, Sunshine." Then he walked over to me. "Hey, Haze."
"Hi, Dad!" I smiled and gave him a hug. "Why're you still home? You usually leave before me."
My father sat down and sighed slightly, stealing a quick glance at my mother. "We wanted to talk to you about something..." The tone in his voice was not a good one and I had suddenly lost my appetite for the eggs and hash browns that sat in front of me.
"About what..?" Did I really want to know what they were going to talk to me about?
No, not really.
I never liked bad news, but who did?
My father took another breath and looked at my mother.
I turned my attention to her.
She smiled weakly at me. "Honey..." She grabbed my hand. "You know how I've been super tired lately?"
I gulped and nodded.
"Well... Ugh. I'm sorry honey... I would've told you yesterday, but Skylar was here and you both were so happy and I didn't want to ruin it..." My mom looked down with sadness written on her face.
My father clears his throat. "Your mom went to the doctor's yesterday to find out why she's so tired and feels like she has no energy."
I nodded once again.
"Mom has..." My father bites his lip. "Chordoma..."
"C-chordoma?! What's that?" That's not what I meant to say.
My parents look back and forth between eachother.
"It's a type of cancer..." My mom whispers.
"W-what..?"
"I'm sorry honey..."
"N-no! It's not your fault! What does it affect..?"
"The skull and spine."
"What does it do?"
"It's a rare, cancerous tumor that grows slowly and it gradually extends into the bone and soft tissue around the skull and or spine. It puts pressure on adjacent areas of the brain or spinal cord. When it happens along the spine, it can cause weakness or numbness in the back, arms, or legs. When it happens near the skull, it can cause double vision and headaches. It can also occur around the tailbone and when that happens it can result in a large lump that can be big enough to feel through the skin and can cause problems with bladder or bowel function." She explained.
"So you have it at the skull if you're tired and feel energy-less all the time? A-are you going to be okay?" I choked on my words.
My mom nods. "I should be. It will probably eventually spread to my lungs, but I'll be okay." She gives me a reassuring smile.
"So that means..."
"Yes. Fluid will probably fill her lungs." My father spoke and I quickly glanced at him.
I looked back at my mom with tears in my eyes.
I gave her a hug. "I'll miss you when you go."
She laughed lightly. "Oh, Honey, I'm not gone yet. Let's live in the moment, shall we?"
We pulled away and I nodded, a small smile displayed on my face. "Mhm... I should get going. Get some rest, Mom." I stand up and wave to the both of them before heading out the door, making my way to the worst place on earth, school.
