It was quiet. Too quiet. That following Monday, I played ninja again. And on Tuesday. Wednesday a little as well. And then on Thursday, I had to go shopping again. Which meant saying goodbye to ninja Cupid mode.
I was a bit upset from last weekend. Not like, mad or anything. Well, a little at Alex. But I was more confused with my feelings. I mean, he kISSED ME. ON THE LIPS. WITHOUT HESITATION.
Ever since that happened, I have been avoiding Alex. I couldn't really avoid Daniel, because we had a project to do, but I would ignore things he would say that were off topic, or I would change the subject.
I spent a lot of time writing in my journal and leaving it in peoples lockers for them to read and hopefully get help from it. Then, it would end up either back in my locker or on my desk, which I was happy about. It became like a community advice thing that people actually respect.
Anyway, I was walking to the store when I saw a familiar blonde bush of hair. And then all that anger from last weekend resurfaced. But, instead of expressing it, I let it build up in silent rage. I guess there was enough to radiate 10 feet, and the blonde looked over at me, smiled, and walked towards me.
"Hey Caleb! How've you been?" He cheered, wide smile and everything that annoyed me.
"Just great. Thanks Peter." I grumbled. He just smiled and it took everything in me not to scoff. I walked passed him, into the store and grabbed one of those carry baskets so I could start my little adventure through isles 6-27. I mentally sighed.
"What're you buying?" I suddenly heard from behind me, nearly making me jump out of my skin. I glared at Peter and he smiled innocently. I really want to rip his lips off his face.
"Groceries." I said vaguely. I looked at my list again, which was on my phone this time and went down the first isle. Peter followed me, of course. It was kind of annoying but, I don't have the heart to tell him to scram. If only.
After a few minutes of shopping, and a few items in my basket, my nerves calmed as Peter and I talked about various things. He was a funny guy, sweet, charming, and over all innocent, but sometimes his behavior could come off as odd and creepy.
When I turned down the baking isle for some brownie mix, because I wanted to make brownies later, I stopped and almost fainted on the spot. There, standing right in front of the red velvet mix was Daniel. I mean, I couldn't avoid him completely because of that stupid project, but I've been trying to avoid him as much as possible outside of school cause, aheh, who would really want to talk about school stuff outside of school?
"What's wrong?" Peter asked from behind me, and I swear I had another mini heart attack. Peter said it loud enough for Daniel to look over and catch sight of me. I looked at him with a face that said, "Good going you silly rabbit."
Daniel smiled instantly when he saw me, and my heart dropped down to my asshole, or it felt like it did. He approached us, and I guess he was ignoring Peters presence, because when he got close enough and looked up from me, (yes up, because everyone is so goddamned tall that they're forced to literally look down,) the smile he had on his face fell a little and was replaced with a subtle scowl.
I noticed, of course, and turned to look at Peter and he held the same face. They both looked like alpha male wolves getting ready to rip each other to smithereens.
I cleared my throat in an attempt to snap them out of their death stares. It worked, and they both looked at me and I flicked both of them in the forehead. "Take pictures of each other, print them out, and stare for as long as you want in your own time. I have fourteen more isles to forage down and I don't appreciate my time being wasted." I scoffed, and walked further down the isle.
I heard Peter snickering from behind me and then Daniels voice came along soon after. "Actually, I need to talk to you." Daniel said. I turned around to see him walking up to me. I don't want to talk, though.
"It's about our project. Is it okay if I come over later so we can discuss it?" He asked. I looked over his face, and decided he was telling the truth. But, I was still uneasy.
"Sure, sure." I waved him off. He smiled instantly.
"Oh and by the way, I'll need your address." He said. I wanted to die right then, because I didn't want to give him anymore information about me than what I already have. I have his number, but I didn't give him mine. And I didn't have a reason to text him until now. So reluctantly, I pulled out my phone and sent him a text with my address in it. His phone dinged and he smirked.
"Really?" He chuckled.
"What?"
He held up his phone, showing me the message, and pointed at the little emoji at the end. "Oh, that?" I asked, innocently. "My finger must have slipped. Like this." I flipped him the bird, replicating the emoji. He didn't seem to find my actions funny, but he chuckled nonetheless. Then he smiled again, that knowing smile.
"Now that I have your number, I'm never losing it." He said, triumphal.
"Good for you." I added, continuing my shopping. Daniel had his own basket full of two boxes of cake and two tubs of icing.
Just then, Peter came up again. "I'll see you later Caleb." He said, eyeing Daniel who was still right next to me.
"Yeah okay." I said, not really paying attention. I heard Peter whisper something to Daniel as he walked past him. I couldn't make out what he said though. I thought it was odd, but I didn't think much of it. Or, I didn't care enough to.
