Emily's POV
"I've known Otis since I was a kid." Maggie stated to Glenn and I. We were standing in the Greene's kitchen as she leaned against the wooden table. "He's run this farm since before my mother died."
I held her hand and leaned my head on her shoulder to comfort as Glenn began to speak, "Who else? Who'd you lose? You told me I had to make it okay somehow. That's what you've been trying to do, right? Which ones?"
Maggie stood up and pointed to different photographs on the refrigerator before hesitantly speaking, "Stepmother. Stepbrother."
I watched Glenn looked at Maggie with sad eyes. Something inside me felt that the two of them would be a great couple, but it would be difficult because of the world we live in now. Walking slow over to Maggie, I hugged her from behind and felt her cries quake her body. Glenn pulled her into a hug as well and I released her to be in his arms fully. Glenn glanced over her shoulder at me and sent him a thumbs up and signaled that I was going into the living room before going that direction.
As I entered the living room, Patricia came out of the guest bedroom that Carl was in. They must be finished with his surgery. As she passed me, I sent her a small smile that she returned. Patricia was such a sweet lady that it my heart that she would soon be given the news that her husband is now dead. She went towards the kitchen and I took a seat on the chair outside Carl's room. Patricia had left the door open so I could hear everything that was being discussed.
"He seems to have stabilized." I could hear Hershel's voice. I let out a breath of air that I didn't realize I had been holding and smiled.
"Oh god. I don't have words." Lori sighed.
"I don't either. I wish I did. How do I tell Patricia about Otis?" Hershel asked, glumly.
"You go to Carl. I'll go with Hershel." Rick said, before Hershel and himself walked out of the room. As he passed me, he stopped. I smiled up to him, which he returned before rubbing my head. I hit his hands away as he spoke up, "You haven't seen Lori in a few days. Carl is gonna be okay. Why don't you go in there, Shortcake?"
I nodded and walked into the room that they had just exited. Lori was sitting a chair beside Carl's bed crying. The tears traveled down her cheeks and stained them red. I looked over at Carl to see that he was still pale, but beginning to recover his natural color. His eyes still covered by his eyelids and his lashes framed his cheek bones. I took my eyes off of my best friend and placed them on his mother again.
"Lori?" I whispered, worried that I would upset her by being in her son's presence. After all, him getting shot was because Sophia and I ran. She turned quickly at the sound of my voice. More tears ran down her face at the sight of me. She put a hand over her mouth and smiled. "Can I come in?"
She didn't respond, but came over and pulled me into a hug. At first, I didn't understand what was going on and awkwardly stood there before I hugged her back. "I was so worried about you." She exclaimed, pulling away and leading me back to her seat next to Carl. She sat down and I sat down on her lap. As she held me in her arms, I laid my head on down on her bony shoulder. "When Rick came back alone, I was scared that we would never find you. Carl was so upset. He seemed so different to be around. When Rick decided that we'd send out a search party, he was determined to find you. At first, I didn't want him out there, but you're his best friend and I knew it would be hard on him to just sit around and wait to see if we had found you. Ever since you helped him with that math paper years ago, he doesn't want to leave your side. You two are the best friends I have ever seen."
