Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Ponyboy and Johnny we're heading back to school tomorrow. I had gotten a job working the cash register at the DX with Sodapop and Steve and actually really enjoyed it. I went to see Dally every Monday, I would be seeing him again tomorrow. He knows about Sodapop and I, which makes everything a lot easier. He was hurt at first. Then he asked if Soda loved me, and he understood. He said he just wanted what was best for me. It was hard that Dally was so good to me. I didn't deserve it.

"Can I help you?" I asked the red headed girl who entered our store.

"Just waiting on the supermodels our front to fix up my girl. Just gas and an oil change. They told me you'd take my money." She responded in a cool and collected tone. She smelled of grass and freedom and I knew she was a gypsy.

"You a free runner?" I asked. She looked at me and grinned a little.

"Yeah I am. How the hell could you tell?" She asked while looking me up and down.

"I used to be a gypsy. Traveled across America for about 5 years. Been to Woodstock, the ocean, and everywhere in between." I explained excitedly. I hadn't seen a fellow hippie in a while.

"You don't look the type doll." She pulled out a weed and lit up and the smell took me back to so many places.

"I've changed a little." I admitted quietly and slightly embarrassed. And maybe even a little ashamed.

"You don't travel anymore?"

"No. I fell in love so it kinda ended my hippie days." She nodded like she understood, but I don't think she did.

"Pretty boy out front?" She asked referring to Soda. I nodded and she grinned.

 I nodded and she grinned

"I fell in love too. But with the road." I smiled. I kissed it so much. I missed scrambling around the United stares with no worries, except how to pay for shit.

She handed me the money and I took it and stared for a second. "Keep it." I said giving it back. "I remember what's it like out there. Keep it."

"I don't need charity doll." She refused.

"Please. For me. Go." I handed it to her and she put her money back in her jean shorts.

"You miss it don't you blondie?"

I hesitated and looked out the window to make sure Soda and Steve were out there. So they wouldn't hear this. "Not a day goes by I don't miss it." I admitted. She nodded.

"Thanks for free shit. Have a good life doll." She started walking out and I waved.

"Hey!" She called and I looked up at her. "Don't forget the road. Just remember it's always there if you ever need it again." I smiled and she did too. I nodded and with that she was gone. She hopped in her car and drove off. And in that moment I had never envied anyone more.
