Chapter Four

The rest of the day went by pretty fast. It didn't matter that I only had first period with him. It just mattered that I was able to talk to him and be by his side. He asked me to meet his friends. Even though I knew most of them, it was still nice to stand by him. He filled me with a feeling that contained safety and lust. But there was something else inside of me that just wanted to be his. That wanted to be called his girlfriend, but I couldn't.
"Laur! How'd it go?" Serena called from down the hall.
"Pretty good!" I yelled back.
"Well tell me!"
"Sure, once you come here and stop yelling from all the way down there." She started making her way down the hall when Derek grabbed her by the waist and turned her around.
"Baby," he said.
"Hold on Rena I'm coming!" I panicked and grabbed the closest thing to a weapon out of my locker. A book I grabbed a book. If I had time to facepalm myself right now, I would.
"Why don't we go back to my place? Like the old times?" He grabbed her  waist and legs. Picked her up bridal style and walked her out of the school into his car and drove off. I fell to my knees, crying, disappointed I couldn't stop him.
"Lauren? What's wrong?" I turned around and saw Alex.
"Alex...I can't explain..I just did something awful, no he did, no wait..." I was incapable of speaking. I was so embarrassed. He picked me up by my arms and started to hug me.
"It's going to be okay. Just tell me what happened. I promise I'll help." He whispered into my ear. I wrapped my arms around him. I never wanted to let go. He was so warm. He made me feel so safe.Finally I was able to answer without getting lost in his scent.
"I-I think Derek is going to do something awful to Serena...something she couldn't stop him from doing without him hurting her." I started crying again.
"You...you mean like?" He asked. I nodded my head in his shoulder. He put his hand on my hair.
"I won't let it happen. You've just got to help me out here. Where does he live?" He asked. I moved out of the hug and saw the mascara stains on his black t-shirt. I laughed in my head.
"Oh I'm sorry.." I said pointing to the stains. He laughed and told me it was okay. I told him the address and we hopped into his car. On the way there, I couldn't help but look at him. Why was he so caring? He could've easily of just left but no, he cared for me. We pulled up and saw his car. We got out of the car and stood outside of the door.
"Are you ready?" He asked.
"No not really. I'm scared of what I'm going to find." I responded. He grabbed my hand and intertwined with my fingers.
"We're going to save her. I promise. She'll be fine." He smiled trying to make me feel better. Just then I heard screaming. We busted through the door that was surprisingly unlocked and ran up the stairs to see a tied up Serena lying on the floor with her mouth taped.
"Oh my god" I whispered. His hands were getting sweaty, I could feel it. He was nervous. She pointed in front of her and putting the same finger to her mouth signaling for us to be quiet. Without thinking I ran in as quiet as possible and tried to untie the ropes. Alex walked in soon after and took the tape off.
"Has he?" Alex whispered. Serena shook her head.
"Alex call the police. I'm going to help her." I said. Alex walked out. I untied Serena and she hugged me. Just then Derek walked out.
"What are you doing here! Oh, I see, you want to join the party?" He cackled.
"Are you high?" I asked.
"Honey, if I were high I would be doing much worse things," he said.
"Oh so you do this for fun? You disgusting human being." He was suddenly boiling with anger.
"The po-" Alex stopped in his place. "Derek, no. Stop."
"Oh you came to save your little girlfriend, Lauren is it?" His hands were shaking. He was so angry.
"Well if she was hurt, of course I would save her." Alex looked at me for approval, "but Lauren and I came to save Serena, because you're about to do something you're going to regret...for the rest of your life"
"I don't regret things. I don't think. This makes me happy." He smiled. Just then the police barged in through the door.
"Derek Patrillo! Put your hands behind your head!" His eyes widened and sharply and quickly went to Alex.
"You little-" he whined but got cut off by the police.
"Shut up. Everything you say or do will be used against you in the court of law," they ordered. They walked him out of the house and into the police car. I looked at Alex and without thinking I hugged him.
"I don't understand...why would you help me? I mean you could've easily walked away but you helped me save her. Why?" I was so stunned.
"Because I care about you. And I felt like I wanted to help you in any way I could," he responded. He hugged me back tightly. Then after a few seconds I turned around and grabbed Serena and hugged her.
"Oh my god Rena, you don't understand. I'm so sorry." I said.
"About what? You saved me! I should be thanking you!" She said back.
"I should've ran faster!"
"Laur, we both know he's way faster than you. There's no way you would've caught up." She laughed. "I'm going to go home. But I'll text you later okay?" She walked off. Something was different about her. Me and Alex walked outside of the house.
"So I assume you don't want to go out tonight?" He asked.
"I do. I really need it." I answered.
"Really? Okay! Cool!" He smiled. "Oh, and Lauren?"
"Yes?"
"I was hoping tonight could be a date?" His smile turned goofy and he just looked so handsome.
"Of course," I smiled. "I'll give you the address to Dawn's house okay?"
"Deal. Eight?" He asked.
"Sounds like a plan." I responded.
"Can I walk you to Dawn's house? You know...to get a...visual picture?" He was so cute when he was nervous.
"That would be smart," I started laughing. We started walking and he grabbed my hand. We walked two blocks to Dawn's house and when we got there our hands were separated and we hugged. I didn't want to let go but eventually I had too. Unfortunately we didn't have a tag yet. Something to call ourselves. Even though I yearned to be called his. After he left I realized what I had done. I had gone against my mom in a way I never thought I would. If she found out, who knows what she would do. Make me move in with my dad. Put me up for adoption. Abuse me even more. Maybe even abuse Alex. All I could hope is if she finds out, she could some way in her heart accept it.
I walked into Dawn's house half expecting her to rush down the stairs asking where I've been. But I found her up in her room.
"Hey Dawn guess what?" I sprung up onto the bed.
"Hm?" She didn't look up from her phone.
"I've got a date with Alex tonight!" I exclaimed.
"Oh that's great," she still didn't look up from her phone.
"Bub what's wrong? Did Dylan cancel on you?" I asked.
"No, no I still have a date with him tonight. It's Serena," the look in her eyes was worried and pained with hurt.
"What happened?" I wondered if she had found out.
"She...she said she didn't want to be friends with me anymore" my face was filled with surprise.
"Did she say why?" I was completely puzzled.
"She said I'm too much for her right now," Dawn broke out in tears. I felt so bad for her, if only she knew what Serena had been through today. I would tell her but it wasn't my story to tell.
"It's okay bub. I'm here. Do you want me to call Nessa?" I comforted her.
"Uh no I have to get ready for my date with Dylan anyway." She was still sniffling but her eyes lit up when she mentioned Dylan. I smiled and helped her up. "Oh you have a date with Alex tonight too right?"
I stuttered, not wanting to take away her spotlight. "Uh ye-yeah."
She laughed. "Laur, you'll be fine. Just make sure your mom doesn't find out," she winked at me and walked into the bathroom with her dress and shoes. She knows right where to get me. Of anything I was really excited for my date with Alex, I knew it would go fine, I was just worried about my mom. If she found out, everything would change like for example I might never get to see Alex again.
"So what do you thi-" she cut herself off and wiped my tears. I didn't even know I was crying. "I'm sorry, is it what I said? I didn't mean it.."
"Well if she found out I might never see Alex again..."
"Have you ever thought about talking to your dad?"
"My mom cut my connection with him when he walked out on us. I haven't talked to him since. And now he's coming back...and I'm nervous," I explained.
"This is your chance to talk to him, you know, now that he's back?" Dawn was right, I should talk to him about what was happening, but I'm afraid he wouldn't want to take any part of it. "Hey isn't your sister coming back too?" She asked.
"Lilliana? Yeah." I answered.
"That's great! I mean your dad may not listen, but your sister surely will!" She was confident in herself.
"I don't know...we used to be best friends but that was a long time ago, I have no idea where we stand now."
"Just trust me. Even if no one decides to listen, remember I am here. And I have an idea if nothing works out..." she sounded nervous.
"Dawn? What's the idea?" I asked concerned.
"Well...I was thinking....no it wasn't my idea...my parents were thinking....they could fight for custody!" She jumped up.
