Chapter 15
As I wheeled away, all hope seemed to drain from the hospital. It was like nothing I could ever do could make this better. Life was just miserable for everyone, some worse than others.
I briskly stepped back to Leigh-Anne’s room and all of the girls looked at me hopefully, hoping that I would tell them what Alicia told me, but I simply nodded. They knew I would tell them later. I grabbed Zayn’s arm and pulled him outside. Once we were outside Leigh’s room I started blabbering with tears in my eyes,
“There are two girls who have been through hell and back. She’s seven and caring for her little sister who is terminally ill. Their mother got depressed and killed herself and their dad abandoned them. Her little sister is living off life support but they only have the money that their mother left them after she passed and they can’t afford her medicine for much longer. These girls are about to lose everything they love and I can’t just sit here and see them suffer. They don’t deserve this, Zayn, we have to help them.” I was expecting to question me, instead he just said, yes.
I let out a breath and led him to Felicity and Alicia’s room. Nothing seemed to have happened in the 5 short minutes that I was gone. Alicia was sitting on the bed braiding her sleeping sister’s hair, for a seven year old she was very talented. She noticed us and looked up with the biggest smile on her face. She raced over to me and hugged me,
“You came back!” She was ecstatic, surprised even,
“Of course I came back buba, why wouldn’t I?” She smiled even wider, if that was possible,
“No one ever comes back once they meet us, they just leave us.” My face dropped, she was so used to being abandoned; no one had ever helped her.
I quickly introduced her to Zayn,
"Alicia, this is Zayn, my fiancé.” She looked at me confused,
“What’s a fiancé?” Her face showed pure interest,
“A fiancé means that they are going to marry someone soon, so saying that Zayn is my fiancé means that he’s going to marry me soon.” She smiled with pure innocence when I explained it to her,
“Oh ok, hello Zayn.” Her cute little voice was high pitch and excited when she spoke. Me sticking to my promise changed the way she acted around us.
Zayn knelt down to her level and stuck out his hand for her to shake it,
“Hello Alicia, very nice to meet you.” Alicia became immediately comfortable with him and placed her tiny palm in his huge hand and shook it. It was strange scene to see a little seven-year-old talking to a fully-grown man like he was her best friend; honestly it was adorable. People say that the most attractive quality in a boy is seeing him play with children; honestly I could see why that was true. Zayn was a natural with her, knowing when to laugh at her jokes and making her laugh. There was no way I could leave these two girls behind; they couldn’t be left again.
Alicia’s laugh was like Tinkerbelle’s laugh, light and delicate, but it also had a touch of a young child who would laugh and scream at the top of their lungs. Felicity managed not to stir the entire time Zayn was playing with Alicia. I couldn’t help but smile, they were the cutest when they were playing together.
We were in there for half an hour before Zayn said that he would be back in a minute. I almost went with him but he whispered for me to stay as he walked out. I started playing with Alicia. She had the most adorable dolls, not because they were pretty or new, but because she treasured them all dearly. She made up little stories and adventures for the dollies to go on and I helped her take them along.
