The stench that assaulted my nostrils as I walked into the bar made me immediately regret letting Jonathan take me here. It smelled like stale beer, rotten peanuts, bad sex and a little bit of weed as a sort of after taste. There were too many slutty girls for my liking and even more sleazy guys making me pull my worn leather jacket closer to my body and cross my arms over my chest. Johnny bought us two beers and proceeded to drink like a fish leaving me at a booth to hustle pool. Needless to say this was not my type of joint, let alone my ideal date but it's what he wanted. Jonathan always got what he wanted.
An hour passed by while I read a book under the table and Jonathan did who knows what. He was only here for the 'rush of humanity' as he would tell me. I was simply along for the ride and as long as I obeyed and kissed him back when he kissed me I would usually come out of these experiences unscathed. He never hit me and he never threatened to, but he had a much more violent and deconstructive kind of 'punishment' as he enjoyed putting it. He would insult me over my hair which was bright red, and there was nothing I could do about it seeing as we were poor as dirt, or he would yell at me for wearing heels because I was too tall and then there was the ever present "Why do you have blue eyes and red hair? You don't match." which was surprisingly hurtful however childish it was. So I went along with what he wanted because I was scared. These kinds of nights were not rare and I had finished many books in the booth I was sitting in. When I finally closed my book and looked up he was doing jello shots at the counter with a crowd around him.
"Seven! Eight! Nine! Ten! Ele- ohhhhhhhhhh" The crowd roared in unison as Jonathan turned and upchucked in the garbage can.
Great. Now I have to go pick him up. I thought getting up from my warm and safe spot in the booth to guide Jonathan to a seat.
"Hey, baby, maybe we should go home now?" I asked in a soft, careful voice. One of his eyebrows went up and he wrinkled his nose at me. "You have work tomorrow babe." I reminded him carefully.
"Bitch I don't have to listen to you. Get me another drink." He demanded in slurred speech.
I simply sighed and went to get him a scotch. There was no point arguing. He would just make me pay for the argument later whether it be with insults or spreading lies and hurting my reputation even more.
I found the only open spot at the bar and got pushed into the guy who was probably just trying to drink a beer and ignore his life by some jackass with too many tattoos and a few missing teeth. I looked up to apologise for my inability to hold my own against nasty biker man and my words didn't come out. This guy was not a guy, he was a full grown moose with chiseled features and perfect hair that I bet he never even had to brush. He was that kind of perfect. I muttered my apology and he nodded with a slightly forced smile.
"one scotch on the rocks." I called to the bartender.
"No! God damn-it bitch! I told you tequilla!" Jonathan yelled from his seat against the wall. I bit my lip and did as he said.
"Hey" Moose Man lightly touched my arm making me flinch at which he pulled his hand back immediately, "Sorry, who is that jackass?"
"My boyfriend." I answered tucking my hair behind my ear and avoiding eye contact.
"Seriously? You look like you belong in a library, not a tacky over crowded pit stop bar with an alcoholic dick." Moose man observed raising his eyebrows. The words had been said before to me and injured me to the core but something about the way he said it made it seem like he thought I was too good for this place.
Before I could answer the guy next to him stood up and slapped him on the back clearing his throat, "You get'em Sammy." He looked like a supermodel I kid you not. Perfect features and beautiful green eyes on a six foot tall body that looked like it was pure muscle. He wasn't as bulky as Moose Man, or Sam as I guessed from the nickname, but the ease with which he moved showed how athletic he was. Supermodel man winked at me and pointing at my jacket said, "That, is awesome." and left.
