ABUSE AND SUICIDE TRIGGER ⚠️ Spot's heart leaped and fell when Race left. He was glad that he had finally found a nice, hot, and queer Newsie to love. Believe it or not, Spot did feel lonely even with the cheers and praise that the Brooklyn Boys gave him, "Maybe. He loves you like a brother?" Spot tried to believe his negative thoughts, "Maybe he's with Specs. Maybe he's jokin' with ya." Spot felt hot tears begin to form, "Stop crying." His brain kept telling him, "Stop it. You're a turf leader, not a wimp."
Race walked to the boardinghouse giddily with his heart setting the pace. He felt accepted and loved for the first time in forever, well at least before he started to carry the banner. Before he became a Newsie he had a name, Antonio J. Higgins, and a family, his mom, Dad, and twin Elizabeth. Life was great in the city, he went to school, wore different clothes every day, had three meals a day, but then his mom died. His mom was killed in a work accident. He never knew what "accident" it was because no one ever told him. He only assumed that it had something to do with her face because they had a closed casket funeral. His dad turned to alcohol to grief. He neglected Race and Elizabeth leading to her suicide due to the abuse. That day when Race found her hanging from the tree outside, was the day that half of himself died too. He began to fight back and confronted his dad. Unfortunately, Race lost, leaving him on the streets with a black eye and no where to go.
Race began to slow down when he realized that he was at his dad's house, "Why the hell did I come here?" He asked himself under his breath as he walked away. Tears began to form in his eyes as he passed the tree Elizabeth died in and the same tree that his mother was buried under too. He stopped in his tracks and walked over to a bush to pick up two freshly bloomed roses and walked over to the towering tree, "Love ya Mom." He said as he placed one Rose on the base of the tree, "Love ya too Eliza." He said with tears now falling onto his cheeks. He then placed the final rose into the tree's branches before, for real this time, going to his new home and family, the Newsies.
Spot rolled out of bed and opened the door to find a young Brooklyn boy with blue eyes and red hair staring up at him, "Are we gonna join?" The kid asked with hopeful eyes, "You wanna spread the word kid?" The little boy nodded in response as a big smile spread across his face. He ran down the stairs yelling, "NEWSIES OF BROOKLYN WE ARE ON STRIKE!" In an endless loop. Spot smiled, the kid reminded him of a mini Race, "Race." His thoughts began echoing, "You've got to tell him." His smile became an inner scowl as he remembered his girlfriend, Elizabeth.
