Narrator's POV

Nervousness courses through Lauren's veins as she walks through the hallways leading up to Lucy's room. The staff at the front desk were very welcoming and helpful in showing her where to go. The directions were clear and easy to follow.

She has to stop and take a breather once she reaches the the door she's been searching for. Once she knocks, she is met again with an awkward silence and suddenly doesn't know what to do with herself. At least 30 seconds pass by and Lauren figures that Lucy hadn't heard the knock, so she goes to do it again. The door opens as she raises her hand to knock again, leaving her hand awkwardly suspended in the air. A slight wave saves some of the weirdness and Lucy simply nods and welcomes Lauren into her apartment as she is in the middle of tying back her hair.

Lucy brings in two cups of coffee and sits on the opposite end of the couch from lauren, a comfortable distance for both of them. Lauren takes a sip and looks at the other girl expectantly. "I hope I made it to your liking, it's been a while since I've made your coffee." She says in an attempt to fill the silence. "It's fine," is the stiff reply she gets in return.

That's when it truly hits Lucy that she has messed up. It is like somebody finally threw her emotions back into her body, everything wells up but she has to get rid of the lump in her throat before it gets weird. She thinks to herself that she is the reason that Lauren is so guarded now and if she had just stood up for herself all those years ago, they would've had the possibility to still be happy and in love. But no- Lucy gave in, she did not believe in herself enough to succeed and chose what she thought was best. To make Lauren despise her just like she despised herself.

"Okay, I'm going to be honest and say that I expected you to stand me up today. I didn't think you would show up, and I really don't know where to start here." Lucy finally addresses the reason they are here while doing everything in her power not to look Lauren in the eyes. The alluring pair of eyes that feel like they're staring into Lucy's soul at the moment.

"Well, you have to start somewhere or I'm leaving. I want to hear the story and I'm gone no matter what- just make it worth my trip over here."

Flashback

"We have a new student in our class this year, so please make her feel welcome and help her out whenever she needs it. Lucy, would you like to introduce yourself?" The girl shrugs as her face lightly flushes due to the attention of the whole class on her. "Hi. My name is Lucy Vives, I am 10 years old, and I just moved to Miami from Puerto Rico." The class gives her a round of applause and the teacher ushers the girl to the last available seat in the back of the room so the class can continue with their group assignments.

Her seat was grouped with two girls her age, both of which make her feel oddly at ease in her new surroundings. The teacher finishes her instructions and the groups begin their work as the newly completed group gets to introduce themselves to each other.

"Welcome! I'm Dinah and this is my sister Lauren." The taller and most likely louder of the two speaks up. There is very little resemblance between the two girls in front of her, which causes her face to slightly scrunch up as she tries to see something that makes them look like sisters. "Stop it Dinah. We're not actually sisters, she just tries to see if people believe it or not." The darker- haired girl clarifies. "Welcome to our school- your new school. I remember when I was new here and knew nobody, so let me know if you need anything and we will be right by your side. You could join us at lunch if you want."

End of Flashback

That was when Lucy met her best friend. She misses the carefree days when she was in the group, but she completely screwed things up and was thrown away to be eaten by the wolves- well, she kind of sacrificed herself to the wolves. But they don't know that.
