'I don't know if you know who you are until you lose who you are' - Taylor Swift
Chapter 17
Lexy still had his phone glued to her ear, hoping the anonymous voice would continue. But, no. All she could hear was the indistinct beeping when you hung up on a phone call.
'Maybe he called the wrong person? Aiden can't be affiliated with drug dealing now, can he? Why the fuck did he mention his girlfriend, me? Am I in danger? Did any of what Xander said was right? It can't be, can it?' Lexy's head was a pool over-fueled with questions.
This night, Lexy didn't sleep. Aiden told her not to wait for him, and that's exactly what she was intending to do. But she couldn't close her eyes, petrified that something -or someone- might intrude their home.
Home. Such a strong word. Home is a place where you feel engulfed with love, where you can be yourself. Where you feel safe. Well, I don't feel so safe here anymore.
She felt so betrayed that Aiden didn't tell her about anything. Nothing, nada. But, there was still this tiny part of her that hoped the caller just messed up phone numbers.
Aiden came back home at 2 in the morning, Lexy didn't make a move to ask him anything. Yes, she was still awake, and her anxiety wasn't helping her so much. In fact, she stayed numb, on her part of the bed, and faked her sleeping. She felt traumatized and didn't want to make a wrong move or anything to alarm someone. What if he was there watching them right now?
. . . . . . . .
The next morning, Lexy waited for Aiden to leave. She wanted to get over with her meeting with Xander.
Looking at her reflection in the toilet's mirror, she realized that baggy eyes were formed. Her whole face was pale, and she was dull, not even capable of moving her legs. She was exhausted, but she couldn't sleep, in fear of something bad happening. Even though her boyfriend kissed her forehead and murmured her sweet words of love. It was her panic's remedy, but today, it didn't work.
She wore a red formal knee dress. She was going to a fancy restaurant, as usual, she had to look good. She didn't want people looking at her, or outshined by Xander (like he always did). She applied a touch of mascara on her eyelashes and a nude lip gloss. She always went out without a heavy makeup on, unlike other girls. She liked it natural.
At 12, she called an Uber and waited for it. She really didn't want to go out of the house because she was scared that someone might follow her. But perhaps it was safer for her? Where everyone could see her, the "kidnapper" had no chance of actually kidnapping her because of the public.
At last, a black SUV parked in front of the house. It honked, so I knew that it was the Uber here to pick me up. I opened the front door, and to my surprise, it was Xander. In flesh and bone, here to pick me up. Well I guess that's why he hesitated when I told him that I was managing my ride.
"Oh" is all I managed to say.
"Come on, hope in, or we'll be late."
And she did. The whole ride was silent. But not the the awkward kind of silence, the soothing and calming one. She wanted to know what was so damn important for him to tell her, but she knew that if she did ask him, he would tell her to be a patient girl.
And the whole ride, he was eyeing her silently. But he kept a solid look on his face, like he was trained to be. A ruthless, cold, heartless CEO. Like any other.
When they finally arrived to the restaurant, Xander got out of the car and opened her door and they both entered the restaurant. The waiter immediately directed them to their table. But it wasn't any table. It was one in a secluded, private place in the restaurant, which came with a breathtaking view : the purity of the ocean. Lexy was mesmerized and Xander hid a smile underneath his cocky grin.
Xander took Lexy's chair out, letting her sit comfortably.
Then came the waitress to take their orders. When she left, Lexy felt she had to get the conversation moving forward, so she did.
"So what is that sooo important and urgent thing that you needed to see me to talk about?"
He looked at her straight in the eyes, for the first time in a while and said, "How have you been?"
Seriously! 'How have you been?'! That's the best distraction he can come up with??
"Well, I've been doing just fine, thanks for your concern." She said, mimicking the higher class.
He looked at her in an amused way and couldn't help but grin.
She continued: "No, but seriously, I need to know what's the important thing you needed to tell me."
"Won't you ask me how I've been?"
She rolled her eyes at him, and said ; "How have you been, Mr. Grey?"
This time, Lexy was sitting across him, she took her time to examine his defined features. He has clear blue eyes, you could see them shining from miles away, a defined jawline, plump lips and dark browne hair.
The food arrived at the table, it was mouth-watering. Well, what would you expect from a fancy restaurant?
While they were eating, he finally spoke to the matter.
"I invited you here today because I had a confession to make."
Lexy had a question mark drawn all over her face. She stopped eating, her fork mid-air.
He cleared his throat and coughed before saying, "I like you, Lexy.' Her fork dropped on the table.
"What?!"
"I don't know when, but I think it's love at first sight."
Lexy couldn't believe what she just heard. She just kept staring at him, not knowing what to say. His eyes changed color, it went to a darker shade.
I used to believe his glassy eyes were ice cold, that they knew no warmth and never shared love. That's what I used to believe. Now I know, the hottest fires always burn blue. And I learned to never judge a book by its cover.
