Maggie's P.O.V.

I'm not good with expressing my feelings. Or, you know, feelings in general. And I love Alex. I love Alex but I don't know how to tell her without stumbling or stuttering or mumbling. So I don't tell her. I really want to, though.

One night, we're laying in bed trying to get some rest. I'm tracing words and shapes and patterns onto Alex's arm to help lull her to sleep. And it's working. Her breathing is slowing down and she's lost all the tension in her body. So I figure she's not on high alert and is way past paying attention to what I'm drawing on her skin. I write three, simple words. Three words full of emotion. Hope, fear, trust. Three words with passion behind them.

I love you

And I should've known. I should've known Alex would be paying attention until the moment she's truly fallen asleep, but I didn't. So I'm surprised when Alex mumbles something. Four words to be exact. Four, simple words.

"I love you, too."

I almost stop tracing. Almost stop breathing. Almost stop everything. But I continue and I trace those three words onto her arm long after she's gone to sleep.

I don't say it out loud for almost another month, but I always draw it, delicately shaping each letter on her skin. And I do it every night, long after I'm used to saying it. Long after it's not just "I love you" anymore. Long after it turns into messages of admiration. Into messages of dreams and hopes and fears and compliments. Long after it's way more than love. And I trace on the night when it's four words. Four words holding our entire future. Four words of commitment. Four words that need Alex's answer.

Will you marry me?

And Alex doesn't hesitate or pause or think before she flips onto her side and faces me. Smiles at me even though I can't see her but I know she's smiling. And then kisses me with passion and hope and trust. With love. And, when she pulls away, she says one word. A word of promises, future, and love. A word of hope.

"Yes"
