Chapter Seven

"What are you doing here?" Katherine spat out.

"What? I can't come to see my niece?" His devilish, yet handsome million dollar smiled played on his face.

"You lost that right to call me niece when you didn't bother to even come to there funeral." She shot a look straight into his light brown eyes, "Heck, you could have at least called."

His smile was knocked off of his face, "Awe common Kat, you know I would have been unwelcome at the funeral." He trailed off talking about how we all hated him.

"We are family!" Katherine sighed lowering her head to the ground, "Maybe I wanted you there." She whispered.

"I'm sorry Katty. You know how hard it would have been for me to show my face around." His large, soft hand rose towards her jaw. A tear trickled down her cheek, "Awe come here." His hand slid around her neck pushing her in, while his other arm was around her back. "Forgive me?"

"So what have you been doing nowadays?" Sitting in the lounge chair, Stan had a wine glass pressed to his lips.

Katherine thought of her answer. She could say, getting put into the hospital. Getting addicted to sleeping pills. Losing her job. But instead she chose to say, "Doing nothing."

"How come? Why's a beautiful woman like you, doing nothing?"

She looked at him in disbelief. For a second, she wanted to tell him everything that happend with her in the hospital but she decided not too. "You know, you tend to be depressed when your mother and father are murdered. And then, the damn feds come to tell you that they are dropping the case." She sighed, "But you? You wouldn't know anything about being depressed."

"Now you know that's not true."

"Is it? You don't look all that depressed."

"I'm sorry Kat." She chuckled and muttered something to herself, hoping he didn't hear.

How dare he show his face around here? How could he after, not calling, not showing up to her parent's funeral. He had absolutely no reason to be here. But that was just Stanley's personality. He would drop by unexpectedly, squeeze out information and then leave.

"Why are you here?" She blurted out.

"Darling I just wanted to catch up." His mischievous smirk spread across his lips. "How's school going?" His up-to-no-good tone changed to a more serious one.

What an actor.

"Stan, I havn't been in school." She look away from his face abruptly, then turned back. "I graduated from college four years ago. You were too busy to even show up." She pursed her lips holding her tongue back from cursing him out.

Remembering her graduation brought a smile to her face. Katherine saw the image of her mother in her head. Once the caps where thrown, she ran towards her mother who was standing up clapping. Her vintage floral dress blowing with the breeze. The smile from her mother's was etched into Katherine's brain. Running up giving her a hug, Mellisa McCann smiled, "I'm so proud of you baby girl." Her mother sighed, "My baby girl is growing up. Pretty soon she's going to be off married and having little grand babies."

Katherine released the hug, "Mother let's not jump to conclusion." They both in unison, laughed as they hugged one another again.

"I love you baby girl."

"I love you too, ma."

And when Katherine's memory was interrupted by her uncle, "Katherine, what are you smiling at?"
