Throughout the year i continued to test my limits with Tom. I'd strike up conversation during classes. My grades have been exceptional so on the weekends, instead of studying, I'd made it a habit of "accidentally" sitting in Tom's usual spot. When he'd show up, frustrated to say the least, he'd sit by me, keeping his distance. I'd continue to read, I wouldn't pay attention to him directly. I Think this got under his skin more than when i tried reaching out to him. It wasn't out of spite, nor did i want to add more resentment on his end. I just wanted him to reach out. I knew when that day came, i was really getting somewhere with him.
It was the last full day of school, tomorrow we were to be going home for the summer. I sat in the usual spot, reading the usual book. After a bit i was accompanied by soft, steady footsteps, but I don't bother to glance up from my book. The familiar figure sits next to me. I can feel their heated glare on me, watching my every move. I marked my page, closing my book and looking up at them with a gentle smile.
"Is something the matter Tom?"
"Yes."
"Oh? What's wrong?"
"You are what's wrong. No matter what i do, no matter where i go, you're there. Until you came to see me here, no one but myself ever dared come near this tree. So what's your goal? Are you just trying to aggravate the hell out of me Belmore?"
I shifted slightly, still smiling gently at the frustrated boy in front of me.
"As I've said before Tom, I simply wish to be your friend. You could have asked me to leave at anytime. But you didn't. "
He had a look of shock and confusion for a split second before returning back to the cold expression that usually played on his features. We sat in silence for a few, and i knew that what i said really struck something in him. I decided to go back to the dorm and pack. I leaned over to Tom, softly kissing his cheek before standing up and slowly making my way past him. He stood up abruptly, grabbing my sleeve.
"What the hell are you playing at?!"
"I'm not playing at anything Tom. I simply wanted to thank you, for sharing this peaceful spot with me this year. It's really quite wonderful. "
And with that i slipped out of his grasp and made my way to the dorm. Leaving behind a confused and very infuriated Tom.

Over the summer I'd grown and developed a bit

Over the summer I'd grown and developed a bit. Papa and i had visited America. I had to admit, i was definitely glad to be back in London. Papa and i had gotten into a teeny bit of trouble with MACUSA for "harboring" a dangerous magical creature. It was just a baby Bowtruckle we'd rescued from a real mean guy. They wanted to exterminate the poor thing! So we'd cut the trip short and took the small creature somewhere we knew he'd be cared for. They had rather backwards laws in America.

I sat in the empty compartment staring out the window. I wasn't really ready to go back to school. Or rather, face him. Over the summer i couldnt help but think of him. Was i really getting anywhere, or was i simply imagining it out of wishful thinking. Maybe i was nothing more than a pathetic lump and that he wasn't doing anything so he wouldn't get in trouble. Maybe he really did hate me. The door to the compartment slowly slid open, drawing my attention in its direction.
'Tom...'
He sat across from me, looking out the window. Not saying a word. I smiled and returned my gaze to the scenery outside.
'Maybe, just maybe, he's warming up to me.'
We sat there, neither of us uttering a word, the whole ride. The smile never fading from my lips.

It seemed potions was going to be a constant between Tom and i, something i was thankful for. Aside from Tom being bloody brilliant at potions, i really felt like we had more to bond over during that class. Unfortunately that was our only shared class this year.
'No matter. There's always weekend's!'
I sat in herbology with Patricia, we were partnered together and learning about puffapods. Such a pretty pink. Suddenly there was commotion on the other side of the room. The professor was scolding a Gryffindor who had a slight blush as he rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. I stepped closer only to see a huge load of Puffapod's by his feet. I giggled realizing he must have dropped his causing it to instantly multiply. This seemed to catch the young Gryffindor's attention as his gaze caught mine. I wide grin plastered on his face as he waved in my direction. I blushed slightly and smiled, returning his wave. He certainly was handsome. Dirty blonde curly hair, bright green eyes, and he seemed fairly tall. I was knocked from my thoughts when Patricia elbowed me in the side. I looked over to her only to notice a smirk on her features.
"He's quite the looker isn't he?"
I shook my head and laughed at my friends Cheeky behavior. We went back over to our places and continued studying the plant until class was over. I'd just exited the door when i felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked back and there stood the dirty blonde boy from earlier. A blush appeared faint on my cheeks as i looked up at him.
"Yes?"
"The names Logan Bexley."
He smiled widely as he held his hand out. I took his hand and smiled back.
" Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm Lana Belmore."
We started walking as he continued.
"So Lana, where are you headed to now?"
"Potions, and yourself?"
"Same as you if you can believe it! You should sit with me!"
He sends me a playful wink. I giggled as i stuck my tongue out.
"Actually, I've Kind of got a potions partner already. Plus, if you're anything like herbology, i think you'd explode me."
He pouted dramatically.
"Oh come on Lana, I'll only cause a tiny explosion."
The two of us burst out laughing before we arrived at our class and started to go separate ways.
"I'll catch you after class, maybe we can walk to lunch together."
I smiled back at him and nodded.
"I'd like that very much."
I slowly made my way over to my potions partner of 3 years now, taking my seat bedside him and smiling gently.
"Good morning Tom."
He glared over at me, for some reason his glare seemed more intense than usual. He turned his attention back to the front of the class, ignoring me completely. Slughorn had announced we were to be creating a shrinking potion. Tom hastily stood up and retrieved the ingredients. I started on the beginning, glancing at him through my peripheral. He's changed over the summer. Not only physically, but there was something different deep within him. A glint in his eyes. We finished the potion, Tom being praised per usual by the eccentric success obsessed potions teacher. When he left us i heard him giving praise to someone else. Curiosity got the best of me and I looked back only to see Logan grinning as he chatted with slughorn. Before long class had ended. Tom hurried out and disappeared before i could even make it out the door. A small frown appeared on my lips before i heard a familiar voice from behind causing me to smile.
"Didn't blow anything up."
I giggled at him as we started making our way to the great hall.
"Ehh, you were just lucky."
"Oh so sure are we? You're pretty cheeky for a Hufflepuff eh? Maybe you should have been a Gryffindor."
"You've just never met the right Hufflepuff's."
We we're almost to the great hall when i saw a commotion in the corridor ahead. I dashed over to see a Ravenclaw bullying another girl from Ravenclaw. I ran up to the bully just as she shoved the poor girl down, making a nasty comment about her glasses. I stepped in between the two.
"What's your problem? Bullying your own housemate just because shes different!"
"This has nothing to do with you, so why dont you go be a good little Hufflepuff and go mind your own business. "
"You clearly underestimate Hufflepuff's. I refuse to sit by and let you torment this innocent girl."
She rolled her eyes and was about to say something before a voice boomed suddenly beside us.
"I should hope you werent being unpleasant to others on the first day, were you miss Hornby?"
I turned around, offering a hand to the now crying girl in front of me. She hesitated before gently grasping it and standing up.
"T-thank you. *hic* my names Myrtle *hic*Warren. "
"Lana Belmore. If they bother you again just let me know okay? No one deserves such unkind behaviour."
I smiled gently at her. She nodded before excusing herself and running to the nearest bathroom. I turned to Logan and smiled sadly.
"Thank you, for getting professor Dumbledore. "
He rubbed the back of his neck embarrassed and smiled back.
"Nah, it was nothing. It was just the right thing to do. You know Lana, you really are surprising for a Hufflepuff. "
I giggled and we entered the great hall.
"You should really make some more Hufflepuff friends. You'd be surprised what we're capable of. "
And with that we went our separate ways.
