CHAPTER ONE
Growing up I never really quite bonded with my parents. I was an only child, my father was rarely around and mom was an alcoholic who liked to pop pills.
I always enjoyed reading, it was my escape from my messed up family. Dad ended up dying when I was 12. A heart attack.
Mom overdosed when I was sixteen. I was on my own after that and shortly after that I met Derek.
I bite my tongue, glancing around the room. The door was shut and I was buried behind my desk.
I could hear everyone buzzing around outside and felt the urge to leave, take a sick day. I felt off today and I wasn't sure why.
There was a knock on my door before it opened and Wesley slipped in, placing a coffee on my desk.
"You alright there?" He questioned softly, glancing around my office.
A year has passed and I was unhinged with myself, but I returned to work just a month ago. I needed a distraction.
I tapped my fingers along my desk and nodded, "Just exhausted," I answered, taking a sip of my coffee.
He nodded, "Captain wants us in the briefing room, apparently there's been a string of murders the past few weeks linked to one man." He says.
I nodded, smiling up at him, "Thanks Wesley." I say. Watching as he left, closing the door behind him.
I sigh out, my eyes landing on the only picture on my desk, a picture of me looking up at Derek, he had Gemma on his shoulders, a wide grin on his face.
Grunting out I collect my notepad before heading out, walking through the office quietly.
I take a seat next to Wesley in the briefing room and lean back in my chair. He tapped his fingers along the table and his leg bounced under the table.
He was nervous, but about what?
The room filled up and the captain walked in, standing at the front of the room. He holds a remote and flicks through a set of dead bodies on the tv screen.
"There's been a string of murders happening over the last few weeks. Gang leaders, government agents being found dead,"
"Some were poisoned, others found beaten to death or shot in the head, really whoever did this is trained,"
The captain looked around the room before his eyes landed on me, "Smith, I want you to dig into this, your one of our best detectives, and Wesley you stay with her." He says.
"Everyone else, go back and look at the evidence and the dead bodies, maybe we can figure out why these men are dead." The captain says before leaving.
I leaned back in my chair and sighed out, "This is going to be fun." I mumble.
Wesley snorted, shooting me a deadpanned look, "What?" He blurted.
I shrugged my shoulders, "I like a good mystery, sue me." I retort childishly.
He rolled his eyes, shaking his head but I could see the smile forming on his face.
He stood up before heading out, I sighed out, heading back to my office to dig up dirt on our mystery man.
I opened up my laptop and after an hour of reading through police documents and eye witness accounts, I realized the man we were dealing with was a murdering machine.
