when next week rolled around, michael was back to the usual of teasing luke and trying to trip him up and calling him 'homo' instead of 'hemmo' whenever he saw him, and luke wasn't really surprised. all good things came to an end, he supposed.
"were you okay without me on friday?" calum asked shyly as he met luke by their lockers in the morning. "you don't seem very happy." he pointed out.
luke shrugged. "i'm tired. i stayed up last night trying to finish several essays." luke said with an awkward laugh. he wasn't lying, but he'd also been thinking a lot about michael. michael seemed to take up most of his thoughts all the time, and he hated it.
"awh, i'm sorry." calum gave him an apologetic smile. "i'll meet you at lunch by our tree, yeah?" he asked softly considering they didn't have any lessons together today, and didn't have time to meet between lessons.
luke smiled and nodded, and the boys said their goodbyes, luke going back down the hall, sighing when he realised he'd have to go past clifford the big red dog (punk) again.
"your boyfriend left you, homo?" michael asked, a big smirk on his face as he made fun of the twink when he walked past. "aww."
luke's hands balled into fists by his sides but he said nothing, and carried on past michael and his giggling friends to his art class, and slipped away into the background again.
he hated michael. he really did. but michael and calum were the only people to give him attention at all. and even if most of the time michael only gave him the wrong kind of attention, it was still attention that luke hardly ever got, so he was thankful.

"are you and calum dating?" michael pestered as he leaned back on his chair, rocking it about all over the place in english, where he'd chosen to sit with luke to annoy him again.
luke didn't really mind, english was a boring class, and he knew everything that he was being taught like the back of his hand, thanks to revision. michael wasn't distracting him as such, he just wished the boy would be nicer to him. "no." he replied blankly.
"are you gay?" michael hiccuped.
luke said nothing and carried on annotating another poem for the assessment coming up. he wanted to ace the test to impress his parents.
"you're ignoring me." michael mumbled.
"mmhm."
"why? is it 'cos your gay?"
luke sighed and dropped his pen onto the paper and leaned back in his own chair, stretching a little and then resting his head on the rest, turned so that he could look at michael.
his hair was sticking to his forehead a little, he looked sweaty since they'd just had PE and played basketball. michael liked basketball, luke had noticed. it was the only time he actually attempted to do anything in PE.
"staring at me?" michael asked, staring back down at the blond boy.
"mmhm." luke hummed.
they stayed quiet for a moment, just looking over each others features. it was weird, and neither of them knew really what they were doing. everyone else in the classroom were talking and throwing paper aeroplanes, even the teacher was on her phone at the front of the class.
michael and luke were in their own little bubble at the back, where seemingly nothing could distract them and snap them back to reality.
luke didn't even notice michael leaning in closer and closer to him, until his head was resting on the table close to luke's as well. so close in fact that he could feel michael's breath tickling his face.
he giggled lightly. "we're very close." he whispered.
"mmhm." it was michael's turn to hum.
luke wasn't expecting it at all when the red head suddenly came very close to him, and managed, somehow, to kiss the boy, capturing his lips with his own.
it was short and sweet, soft and gentle, everything luke imagined a kiss to be, and it was over before it begun.
luke blinked and michael was out of his chair.
when luke lifted his head to see what the red head was doing, he saw him with his bag over his back leaving the classroom, with the teacher running after him to find out why he was leaving lesson when there was still half an hour left.
luke was left blushing at the back of the classroom, running his fingers over his lips, not believing what had just happened.
