I walked towards the music. I kept getting closer and closer. I ended up in a clearing between the trees. Because the sunshine could get to the ground here there were wildflowers that almost reached my waist, in numerous colors. He stood there in the middle and was playing his violin. I still remember how he played the exact same song in one of the towers of the cathedral over a century ago. He stopped and lowered his violin.
With his back still facing me, Rafe said, "Are you going to say something? Or are you just going to stand there?" He turned around and gave me a playful grin. Only him looking at me made me blush.
"I'm sorry. Hey, Rafe."
He chuckled a little. "Hey," he responded.
We both stepped towards each other to meet in the middle. When... Baaam! Lightning struck a nearby tree that immediately caught fire. The sky above us turned red, a strong wind picked up and ashes flew past us. The burning tree fell down between us so we couldn't reach each other. At the same time, I heard a scream. That was Emma.
"You have to wake up and find your sister!" Rafe yelled. It was hard to hear him with the wind and fire making so much noise. "But go back to sleep as soon as you and your family are safe! I can only talk to you through your dreams!" I nodded. The flowers started to spread the fire, as soon as the flames hit Rafe, he disappeared. The flowers around started to catch the fire now too. It was all around me. I had nowhere to go. Now the flames started to eat on me as well. I felt them burning and screamed in pain when I woke up.
I stood up as fast as I could and ran to Emma's room. She was gone. I kicked open the door and started yelling at mom and dad, telling them to wake up. My mom was rubbing her eyes and yawning. My dad was just groaning in protest.
"What is it, sweetie?" my mom asked, still half asleep.
"Mom, Emma is gone! And I don't know what exactly is going on but I know it's not good! Emma could be in danger or hurt or maybe even dead! And..."
"Calm down, Kate," uttered my dad, who still hadn't moved or even bothered to open up his eyes.
"What is all the commotion about?" asked Micheal who had just stumbled out of his bed.
"Your sister is just worried about Emma," my mom explained.
"I'm serious, guys! I am telling you, something bad is going on."
"Like I said calm down. Emma has been taking walks at night for a while now. And in the morning she's always sleeping in her bed, ready for breakfast."
"Your father is right, Kate. She's probably just getting some fresh air. You know she hasn't been sleeping well. A walk through the woods probably just helps her take her mind of Gabriel."
"But it's pouring outside! I don't think that she's running outside in the rain just to get her mind off things!"
"Stop yelling, Kate," grounded Micheal. "Maybe she's not even outside. Maybe she's just downstairs watching some TV because she couldn't sleep."
"Really?! None of you are even slightly worried?!"
"Go to bed, Kate. I can guarantee you that Emma will just be sleeping in her bed when you wake up."
"I doubt you can guarantee that."
"Honey, listen to your father and just go back to sleep," my mom said sweetly.
But I was furious, I couldn't understand how they could be so calm about this.
"Yeah, and don't make so much noise anymore, okay?" Micheal yawned.
"Are you serious?! You just got Emma back and now you're not even worried about her?!"
"Kate..." my mom started.
"No! No, it's fine! Be that way but I'm not going to drop Emma just to get my beauty sleep! Good night!" I stormed to my room and kicked my parents' bedroom door shut on my way there. Micheal just shook his head and crawled back into his bed.
"Um, should I..." my mom started to get up.
But my dad grabbed her wrist. "No, honey. It's fine, I promise you everything will be fine. Kate is just overreacting. You know the age she's on right now. She'll realize that she's exaggerating and will go back to sleep. And Emma will be back soon."
"Hm, maybe you're right."
"Of course I am," he chuckled. "Now, come back to bed." My mom tucked herself in again and cuddled with my dad.
It only took a few minutes before they were fast asleep again. I waited until I heard Micheal's snoring which came not long after my dad's. That's when I knew it was time to go after Emma. I took the pine wood box from under my bed. I opened it and in the bundle of fabrics, that I put in there to protect it, I saw the silver knife with the bronze handle and numerous decorations. King Robbie came to our house not too long ago, he gave it to me. He and the rest of the council of Loris are transforming the hideouts, that ones served as different lairs for the Dire Magnus, into centers for equal rights and help for magical beings. This also includes the mansion in New York. When they were fixing the place up, king Robbie was helping with organizing the office. While some other dwarfs tried to get the snake out of the tiny jungle-like area, he was looking through the drawers of the desk. Apparently, a lot of Rafe's stuff was still there. In one of the drawers laid the knife. He figured that it belonged to Rafe and kept it so he could give it to me later. He also brought back Micheal's knife. He took it with him earlier to let the royal dwarf smith to upgrade it. And lastly, he gave Emma a slingshot and a bag full of sharp-edged icosahedron shaped stones.
When my mom looked worried at the weapons Robbie gave us he just gave her an insecure smile and said, "Kids gotta defend themselves, right?"
Thinking of Emma's slingshot... I walked into her room and checked if it was still there. No, it was gone. Now I moved even faster. I basically flew down the stairs while still trying not to wake anyone up. Just in case, I checked the living. Nobody was there. I noticed an orange light. The tree was on fire. I walked to the window to look at it when I stepped in something. There was a puddle of chocolate milk on the flour. I looked back outside when I heard the thunder roar and saw the flashing lightning. This is definitely not the kind of weather to take a stroll outside. I grabbed my jacket and also saw that Emma's wasn't there. And took my shoes, again Emma's were gone. I stormed out the door. "Emma!"
