In my dream, I opened my eyes to see Rafe standing in front of me. But something was odd. He didn't have his playful grin on his face, he didn't say hi to me and called me a cute name, he didn't run to me to give me a hug, he was just staring at me. His eyes were cold and piercing, his arms were crossed and he was clenching his yaw just a little bit. I was surprised to see him like that. I looked to the ground and fumbled with my dress. my mouth was starting to turn dry as he kept staring at me. "Rafe ..." I stuttered. "are you mad at me?" He didn't answer for a while but then he finally spoke up.
"Stop playing games, just come out, coward" He growled. I was confused but then realized it wasn't directed at me. I turned around and saw a man stepping from behind the tree.
"Sharp as always, Rafe." He had a smirk on his face that send shivers down my spine.
"If anyone should know that it's you." That's when I noticed that he had the exact same green eyes as Rafe.
"Rafe, is he another Dire Magnus?" Rafe didn't answer. "They can't see me, can they?" They probably didn't since the man started talking like I hadn't said a word.
"I told you this would happen. Look what she did to you." His tone was dripping with fake empathy.
"What she did to me?" Rafe chuckled darkly before snapping at the man and making me almost jump out of my own skin. "What she did to me?! This is your fault!" The man was staying incredibly calm.
"Oh, really? My fault? I would disagree..." His calm and amused expression dropped making room for a cold and irritated one. "she had it coming."
"Shut up!" A flame started to form in Rafe's hand. He threw the fireball at the man who simply waved his hand to make the fireball change directions right before it hit him. Instead of him, the fire hit one of the beautiful old trees. His amused smirk found its way back onto the man's face.
"Pity, this was that special place that you two shared, right? And now you're the one responsible for destroying it." The man looked satisfied as the flames started destroying the old trees and beautiful flowers.
"Don't listen to him!" I know Rafe couldn't hear me but I screamed it at him anyway. He is such a strong person but he still couldn't hold the tears that were starting to roll off his cheeks. He firmly closed his eyes, balled his hands into fists and shivered. It looked like he was in actual pain.
"You'll pay for this," Rafe growled.
In response, the man just smiled... I didn't know an actual genuine smile could be so terrifying. "Oh, Rafe, my boy. We don't have to fight. Just join us again and you can go back to her easily."
Rafe shook his head and stood his ground. "No, I won't hurt her again!" His eyes were firmly shut as tears escaped them. "And I'd rather live without her then harm her again!"
The man chuckled as he stepped forward. "Her naivety is rubbing off on you, boy." I saw a reflection of light pulling my gaze to the blade of a dagger he hid behind his back. I yelled Rafe's name but to no avail. "Let's get rid off that, shall we?" the man finished before sinking the knife in Rafe's chest, right into his heart.
I screamed the air out of my lungs. Rafe's eyes snapped to mine. 'Did he hear me?'
With a crumbling voice filled with pain, Rafe whispered, "Kate?"
Then the man ripped the weapon out of his chest and pushed Rafe to the ground. His eyes had closed again, but this time they wouldn't open. I was frozen in place, my voice not obeying as I asked it to pierce the ears of any bystander.
The man, still holding the dagger with Rafe's blood on it, gave me a smile, bowed and said in a voice full of cheer, "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Katherina. Call me Remus."
