My head seemed to be spinning. I was worried about Rafe. Margery said that everything was fine and now all of a sudden it definitely wasn't. Is he sick, hurt? Does it have to do with what happened in the dream? I had to clear my mind, I now had a different issue to deal with. I stepped further into the warm room and saw the girl that I had met in the alley a few days ago. Although 'met' might not be the right word to use.
She slowly blinked. She probably just woke up from a nap. When she saw me standing there she pushed herself to sit upright on the bed. Mia, I believe it was. With a bit of a shaking voice, Mia asked, "Who are..." But after rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand she stopped her question and asked a different one instead. "What's your name?"
"Katherina, but you can call me Kate like all the others," I answered with a smile.
"I'm Mia."
"I know." I walked over and sat on the chair next to the bed.
"You're the girl that saved me, right?"
"Well, not exactly. I didn't do much other then run up to that man like an idiot. I believe that Rafe deserves the credit for you being here."
"But you were the one that wanted to help me when no one else would."
"Yes..." I said a bit unsure.
"Then you saved me... Thank you. I know it's not much but I am grateful."
"I didn't do much either."
Mia sighed. "Apparently it is. No one else bothered to step up." Because I wasn't able to think of something to say that felt right I just put my hand on her shoulder to show her support. I felt... out of place but the words left my mouth.
"I'm here for you. If you need to talk, I'll listen. It doesn't have to be about that. I'll listen to anything." She nodded and gave me a smile.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course."
"What will happen when I'm better? You know when I can walk again, eat again and stuff."
"Then you can go home."
"But I- I..." She stayed silent. I gave her a little while to continue but after realizing that she wouldn't I asked her.
"What do you want to say?" No response. "If you don't want me to tell anyone I won't." I stood up from the chair. She stopped staring at the blank spot on the wall, her eyes now on me again. I gave her the most reassuring look I had. "It's okay if you don't want to tell me. There's no pressure. Would you prefer me to leave?"
I saw a bit of panic glinting in her eyes. "No," she muttered.
I slowly sat down again. "It's okay. I can stay for a while."
She hugged her knees and stared at the white paint of the walls before speaking. "I want to tell you but you'll think I'm... weird."
"I don't think I will. I've seen a lot by now I doubt what you want to tell me will be weird to me."
She seemed deep in thought, uncertain. "I don't have a home."
"You live on the streets?"
"No, I lost my parents. I live in an orphanage." That hit close to home. This was another thing we had in common. For the second time, I wasn't able to decide on what to vocalize. Everything that my mind came up with sounded either self-centered or cliché. "And I don't want to go back... It's bad there. "
"How come?"
Mia shrugged. "No one cares for you there. If you fall ill it's your problem. Little kids with injuries don't even get a glance. No one cares," she explained. Without any sound around us, she repeated to herself. "No one cares." She tried to put as much stress off her shoulders through a heavy breath. "I'll have to go back there when I'm better. I'll have to, right?"
