"Hey Jake."
"Please don't call me that."
"Come on. Aren't we friends?" Clara pouted.
"Sure. But I have a nasty ex who called me Jake, and it dredges up really bad memories."
"Like how bad?"
"Horrifying."
When she didn't look convinced, he continued. "One time, I went to my neighbors house to borrow a cup of sugar. I was gone for like five minutes, and when she realized what I was doing, she called the police. When they showed up, I had a plastic baggie full of white powder sitting on my kitchen table, and had to spend the night in jail."
"Is that why you broke up?"
Jacob shook his head. "We were together for more than a year after that. I was in love, but boy was I stupid."
Before she could respond to that, he started is countdown, and she busied herself with the dishes in the sink.
