I read recently about being in the depth of a desert at nightfall and about the silence being deafening... and it is!
I know that kind of silence feels deathly, chilling almost (and knowing what I do about desert temperatures, the nights would indeed be chilling, especially after the tremendous heat of the day).
And I thought that here was yet another thing to love about being farmers - the sounds of evening. Cows mooing from time to time for their calves, maybe a bull serenading his desire, lambs bleating for their mothers and ewes calling them home. And birds. So many birds chattering to each other, their chirping sounding happy and excited - no doubt sharing news about their day and happenings - maybe plans for their tomorrow's journey. And frogs - if there's any water around.
So that's our 'kind of hush' - not really so quiet at all - when you listen. And even when the birds finally settle for their 'end of the day', the domestic animals still graze and snuffle and call to each other - but usually not so often as daytime. Comforting sounds for those of us fully accustomed to the rhythm of our land.
