While talking Alyssa felt her phone buzz and she frowned a bit to herself. She ignored the first buzz then got another. She started to pull out her phone to check and felt Laura's eyes on her.
'Alyssa, LA is being weird with his driving and I'm getting a bit scare,' was the first message. 'He's going faster.' , Michelle's second message
"Who is it?" Laura asked a bit more upset than worried. Alyssa didn't reply. She didn't know what to say or do.
'Im sorry Alyssa,' popped up on her phone. Laura got up from her seat and came behind her to look at the phone.
"Michelle?" she asked. Alyssa looked back at her. "Why are you texting her? Especially while with me?" she asked in a slight shout. Alyssa looked around at Laura's family watching her.
"I wasn't, she texted me," Alyssa said softly. She was having troubles thinking now unsure what to do. "I think she could be hurt," she mumbled.
"Who cares? If she is hurt that is her own fault she doesn't need to go to you because of it. Let her be hurt she probably deserved whatever hurt her," Laura crossed her arms.
Alyssa felt her blood boil, she understood why Laura wouldn't like her but Michelle was still a person and wouldn't deserve to be hurt.
"I care!" she told her. She looked around a bit at the silent family members watching her. Her phone buzzed again in her hand, buzzed with a call. "Hello?" she said softly when she answered.
"Alyssa! He hit something! He isnt moving and I can't undo my seat belt. I can't move, a tree is on the car between us and he isn't responding. I can't move on I called 911. They're sending someone but I don't know what to do! It hurts and Im dizzy and.. please.." her voice trailed off.
"Michelle? Michelle?! Where are you? Hello?? Please be okay!" Alyssa yelled into the phone feeling tears in her eyes. She heard the sirens in the background and yelling followed.
She looked around, the kids looked scared, Justine looked concerned, George looked out of it, Cathy looked mad, Max looked curious, and Laura, Laura looked pissed."Hello?" Alyssa heard a man's voice.
"Hello? Who is this? What is happening??" Alyssa asked.
"Ma'am calm down, we are taking them to the hospital, she is still breathing but not responding. The boy we aren't sure," the man, probably a paramedic, told her.
"What hospital?" she asked.
"South shore. We don't know who is in her family or anything but can you let them know?" the man replied.
"I don't have their numbers.. They should be in her phone though," she said biting her lip.
"Thank you ma'am, I will call someone," he said and hung up. Alyssa lowered the phone and looked at all the eyes on her.
"Well? What did she want?" Laura asked with her arms crossed.
"She got in a car crash.. She passed out and a paramedic found her phone. She's.. at the hospital.. South shore, I don't know that one," she said softly.
"That's the one down the road," Justine said. Alyssa thought then remembered seeing it.
"I need to go there," she said softly getting up.
"No you don't. You need to stay here," Laura said gripping Alyssa's arm.
"If my friend might die I want to see her!" Alyssa argued as she pulled her arm back.
"If you walk out that door then we are over!" Laura stomped her foot and her voice squeaked. That squeak Alyssa had been ignoring for two months. The squeak that made her body cringe when they first met.
The squeaky voice that had often been the main reason for Alyssa putting in a movie, or going to the bathroom, or saying she had a headache and didn't want to talk much more. She thought of the things Laura did that she hated, she thought of how she had been acting lately. This wasn't what she wanted.
Alyssa cancelled her gym membership on the second day going because Laura thought gyms were gross. Alyssa joined the book club because Laura wanted to read the book to her. Alyssa didn't wear the tie because Laura said so. Alyssa wasn't her own person anymore, she was Laura's.
Alyssa looked Laura in the eyes and pulled the bow tie from her pocket. She slipped it around her neck and tied it.
"Okay," she said softly. Laura smiled a bit and took a step to her. Before she could touch her, Alyssa turned on her heels and left the house out the front door.
