"Love her?" Alyssa asked nervously.
"Yeah. I mean, you really care about her. Grandma always said, you will know you love someone when you find the person you care about more than yourself. Someone you'd go to the ends of the earth for. Someone you don't want to picture a life without," he said, "so you love her."
"I.. I mean," she trailed off.
"Is it because you're both girls? Grandma said that is okay too. Her son loved another man, and that is okay. Love is love no matter what. But, Uncle Dee got hurt for his love. Grandma says not everyone believes in love the way we do."
"It doesn't matter if I were to love her or not. She doesn't like girls that way. She wouldn't love me back," Alyssa told him.
"That's sad," he said softly.
"So, what day exactly is your birthday?" she asked trying to change the subject.
"Sunday," he said. Today was currently Friday, so his birthday really wasn't far.
"Oh it is close!" Alyssa exclaimed excited for him. "What room have you been staying in?" she asked.
"Floor 2, room 4," Jayden told her looking a little proud for remembering.
"Layden!" a voice called. They both looked and a woman stood near the entrance. She wore a simple T shirt and sweat pants. Her hair was up in a bun and she looked exhausted.
"Aunt Marie," he said smiling.
"I came to pick you up tonight. Your dad works over, and ma is gonna be out for the whole day, I didn't want you bored," she smiled as she came over. She looked at Alyssa then at Layden curiously.
"Aunty, this is Alyssa. She's here with her friend that she loves. She kept me company while waiting today," he told her smiling a bit.
"Well thank you Alyssa, I'm glad he wasn't all alone," she smiled. "Now come on Layden, we gotta get home before Amelia tears up the house," she chuckled and took his hand.
Alyssa waved at them and watched them leave. She was glad this little boy had family that cared and treated him well.
She hoped his grandma would be okay, and she was a little surprised such a young boy understood being gay was okay, she liked that.
Too many people believed kids wouldn't understand these days. She finished up her salad and decided she would take the smoothie with her. When she got back she sat down, and opened her laptop.
