The rain was pouring harder, but the man didn't slow down. Water stung my eyes as I ran to catch him. My two senior officers were left behind, courtesy of my long legs. The man made a sharp turn into an alley, I had to grab a post and swing myself to the right direction.
"Give it up!"
I slowed down seeing the huge wall at the end of the alley. The man smacked the wall and then stood still with his back to me. Carefully, I approached him.
"It's alright. We're not going to hurt you-..."
My hand just reached his shoulder, when he turned around and a loud bang deafened my ears. I blinked. An incredibly painful but dull feeling erupted in my chest.
"Oh my god! What have I done?"
"What did you just do?"
Two figures ran towards us. All of my strength left me, my vision blurred. The man's vague silhouette was replaced by darkness.
Bright white light kept flashing through my eyes and pain. Pain was all I could feel.
"Dr. Kim!"
My eyes saw a blurry image of a dark haired woman looking down on me. I could barely see anything, but somehow I had the impression that she was beautiful.
"She's losing a lot-...have to hurry!"
They sounded so far away.
I closed my eyes and felt the pain slowly disappear.
"Ugh..."
When I came to, the white walls and disinfectant smell of the hospital greeted me. I had a dextrose on my left arm and when I tried sitting up my chest flared up in pain.
"Ow, ow, ow! That hurts!"
Aside from the blanket and hospital gown I had on, there were also white bandages all over my chest.
"Okay, bandages and a dextrose. Can't be that bad, right?"
I was pulled out of my thoughts when a group of nurses wheeled someone at a very fast pace. Many people were hurrying on the other side of my window.
What day is it today? Is the hospital normally this busy?
A nurse passed by, and saw that I was awake. She excitedly gestured at someone, few seconds later, a different nurse opened the door holding a clipboard and a tray of medical stuff.
"It's nice to know that you're awake officer."
The nurse checked my dextrose, the monitor beside me and other things.
"It's been a week and a half since you were rushed here."
I smiled shyly, as she took my blood pressure.
A week and a half? Oh my god! I was a huge pain in the butt for a week and a half!
The nurse gestured to my bandages and I nodded. It was uncomfortable, so I just looked at the wall.
"Is it- was it that bad?"
I couldn't exactly tell; my wound didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. Maybe it's the meds.
"Around two inches away from your heart, but you were shot by a homemade gun. Amateur work, thank goodness! You were lucky no major vessel or bone was hit and you were also lucky Dr. Kim hadn't left the building yet at that time."
She applied something that felt soothing, after the initial sting. Instead of wrapping me up in bandages again, she just placed an adhesive bandage on me.
