"You didn't tell me she was waiting in the car!"
I whispered, dragging my eyes away from the sleeping woman who was almost swallowed by her beige coat.
Jisoo grinned at me, but addressed the driver first. The cab pulled out of our street.
I looked back to see Lisa watching with a somber expression, her black backpack slung over one shoulder.
I've only ever seen Lisa use her violet backpack for trips, and it always looked full. She stood out like a lost child whenever she met up with her police colleagues before leaving.
This bag though, was trim and dull black, professional looking, something an actual officer would use.
It's the first time I saw it.
"She was already sleeping before we arrived at your place, so she wasn't waiting."
Jisoo strained against her seatbelt to look at me. She grinned.
"As happy as she'll be to see you, I don't recommend waking her up before we arrive."
Jennie was leaning her head back between the window and the headrest. It didn't look like a comfortable position, but she was asleep so it worked for her.
I caught Jisoo smiling fondly, as Jennie-unnie scrunched up her nose, but the smile turned to a smirk when she saw me looking.
What did she tell Lisa?
You know where Lisa's going, don't you, Jisoo?
"Pasta, are you trying to burn me with your eyes? Glaring is rude, more so than staring."
Jisoo flashed her pearly white teeth. I was taken aback by the spark of irritation at the sight.
"You know where she's going."
I didn't ask, I stated.
Jisoo's playful mood wasn't affected at all by the biting tone in my voice. In fact, her grin widened.
"To do her job, of course."
Jisoo glanced briefly at the driver, then fixed her gaze on me. Her dark eyes glittered from the diminished lights passing through the tinted windows.
"I like your voice, but it's really in our best interests not to wake Jendeuk."
She was warning me. Yet, she was also taunting me. If she wants me to shut up, then why sound so patronizing?
I leaned back into my seat, glaring at her. A loud thonk made me whip my head in Jennie-unnie's direction.
Her head got out of the crook of the headrest and hit the window. I winced for her.
Maybe I should-
We took a left turn, and Jennie slowly slid towards me. I caught her, before she hit her head on my lap. In the corner of my eye, I saw Jisoo's elbow stick out of her seat.
Cute. She was ready to catch Jennie-unnie, despite being up front. I was about to smile, but then I remembered I was supposed to be irritated at her.
Focus on Jennie, ignore Jisoo.
Instead of letting Jennie use my shoulder, I scooted closer to the door on my side, and gently tugged Jennie along. I pulled her into my arms, so she could lean into me, be comfortable, and not strain her neck.
Hitting two birds with one stone.
Jisoo almost broke her neck just to frown at me. It was a frown of shock and utter confusion. The question was pretty clear even if it wasn't said.
