Evan couldn't sleep.

He had tossed and turned and tried his best, but the clock on his nightstand read 1:17 AM and he hadn't slept at all.

His mind was racing. He hadn't been able to stop thinking. About what? About anything, really. His train of thought had been thrown off the tracks and he couldn't keep himself on one topic for too long.

Form his parents to his other parents to his childhood friend to his time in the orphanages to--

Rosaleen.

Rosaleen had been awful. And Sam had no idea of what had been going on.

He remembered one time, when Sam had almost caught her...

"Oh hey, Evan," Rosaleen cooed softly, stepping up to the boy from behind.

Evan felt his shoes glue themselves to the floor. He unconsciously found himself clutching his books tighter to his chest. Trying to fight how his hands were shaking, his ducked his head down.

Don't look her in the eyes, don't look her in the eyes, don't look her in the eyes, don't look her--

"You know," she said, blowing a bubble in her gum and promptly popping it. She leaned down so that could whisper directly into his ear, "You'd be kinda cute if you weren't so shy."

Evan closed his eyes. She was just trying to get into his head. She did this every time. Don't listen to her. Don't let her. Don't let her win this time.

"You're definitely too young for me, but... there are plenty of girls in your year."

Evan didn't say anything, and Rosaleen slung her arm over Evan's shoulder. She ignored how he flinched away from her, instead tightening her grip on him.

"Hey, I've been meaning to ask you a question for a while now, actually."

Evan tried to brace himself, but no amount of preparation would help.
