"Psst, Octavia you see that deer!" I whisper yell to her. She was a few feet away at the moment and had just turned to see the creature emerge out from behind a bush.

"You wanna get it?" She asks looking to me.

"Why not." I state and grip my spear in my hand tightly. I make sure to get a good angle on my throw and a good release.

"Now!" Octavia whispers, causing me to chuck the spear right at the deer. It drove right through the chest, making it collapse.

I stand there for a moment, realizing what I had just done.

"NOOO!" I cry collapsing into my knees. "What have I become, I just killed a beautiful animal, it wasn't even doing anything to us. I mean it was a good kill. Wait no how could I be so-"

"Um Maddie?" Octavia questions in a scared voice as I look over to her only to see a grounder holding her in a headlock.

Really? I think to myself as I freeze where I'm standing.

"What do you want?" I ask but of course I get nothing in response.

I look to Octavia and give her a look that locks her eyes to mine as I reach my hand against my pocket and tap against it, gesturing to the knife I had in there. She seems to get the memo because her hand drifts down to her pocket as I keep the grounder distracted.

"I'll ask again, what do you want?" I repeat staring him down, hoping Octavia would get the knife out soon.

"Maddie look out!" Octavia screams pointing behind me as I quickly turn around and luckily grab the grounder's incoming hand. I twist it around to the back of him, causing his body to stiffen in pain, just as I had done with Lincoln. He then elbows me in the nose from in front and I cup my hand over it as if that would do anything. I attempt pulling out my knife with the other hand, but he catches on quickly and shoves my body into the nearby tree, knocking the knife onto the ground. He towers over me and throws a punch at me but I duck and swipe my foot across his shin, dead legging him. I then scurry over to my spear, pull it out of the deer, and turn around just in time for me to block his sword from piercing into me.

Before I could react, the blade of a spear was driven through his abdomen and pulled right back out, putting the grounder down and revealing Octavia behind him.

"Are you alright?" She asks me helping me up.

"I think so." I say looking at my body to make sure I was still in tact.

"It's a good thing Lincoln taught you how to fight, I can see it paid off." Octavia says panting from the battle.

"You're not too bad yourself." I compliment her as I smack my hand against her arm. "We are definitely at war, I just hope everyone else stays safe out there."

"Yeah we should get back, we might have killed one thing but I'd rather that than us be the dead ones." She says causing me to nod in agreement.

"Let's go gather our kill and make our way back to camp."

We pick up the deer and place it's body on a tarp we brought along with us.

"Dang this thing is heavy." I groan lifting up one side while Octavia grabs the other.

"Sure is, but that means more meat for us." Octavia replies making me chuckle. Before we left I picked up my knife from the ground and placed it back into my pocket.

We walk for a bit more before I spot movement behind a nearby tree.

"Hey O, over there do you see that?" I ask jolting my head towards the figure half sticking out from behind the bark.
