Dinner Guests

The next night is a mess, to say the least. While a dinner with Max was simple in thought, but actually accomplishing that with a brother that is sure that said man is the head vampire is a whole different story.

The night starts out bad with Mike wanting no part in the dinner. This leads to him leaving right before the dinner is due to start, only to run into Max on his way out.

Once Max is in the house, I lead him out to where Mom is, mentally noting the fact that Grandpa hid himself in his work area.

When we find Mom, she's pleasantly surprised to see Max.

"Is it okay for the guest to see the food before the dinner?" Max quips, prompting me to roll my eyes at his lame joke.

Nevertheless, Mom responds in kind. "You're thinking of the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding."

"Oh, right. I always get those two confused." Max comments.

"Sure, you do," I remark, straightening a few of the table placements. "I'm sure you also confuse-"

"Kirianna. Be nice."

Sighing, I nod to Mom's scolding before walking away to investigate when I hear the front door open.

Looking around the corner, I see Sammy with two boys I don't recognize. The two boys seem to size me up before dismissing me, though they don't hesitate to give me the stink eye when they have to stop next to me.

"Mom," Sammy says, interrupting she and Max's moment. "These are my dinner guests. Edgar and Alan. The Frog Brothers."

Mom is understandably confused and even a bit shaken. "I didn't know you were having guests..."

Sammy shrugs a bit. "Well, mom, if we're in your way we can just eat peanut butter out of the jar in the kitchen."

Mom immediately vetoes that idea. "No, no... there's plenty for everybody..." Quickly glancing at Max, she decides on introducing all of us. "Oh, Max, this is my son Sam, my daughter Kiri... and Edgar and Alan Frog..." Her tone tilts up a little at the end of the statement, as if not sure if she had heard right.

After introductions, we all sit down to eat. I sit at the end of the table, opposite my mom and, unfortunately, between the Frog brothers. Max is on one side of Mom with Alan beside him, while Max is on the other side with Edgar beside him.

The dinner continues to go south when Sammy and the Frog Brothers insist on making fools out of themselves.

I avert the first disaster by taking the garlic disguised as parmesan before the boys can give it to Max. The three boys are noticeably irritated at my interference but don't give up.

They try again with the garlic, sadly succeeding this time. It apparently doesn't have the desired effect because they immediately panic a little.

"He likes garlic." I hear Sam say to the Frog brothers, making me internally groan. He then picks up a glass of water that was sitting near him. "Here, have some water."

Instead of handing it to Max, though, Sammy spills it all over Max's lap, soaking his shirt and pants.

"Sam, what's the matter with you?" Mom exclaims as she tries to help Max dry off.

Sam, though, ignores her question. "Does it burn?" He asks Max, to which Max responds, "Burn? Are you nuts? It's freezing."

That doesn't seem to be the answer that the three idiots are looking for, because they signal to each other as Mom is flitting about Max, still trying to dry him off. Seconds later, the lights go out.

"Now what?" Mom's statement is laced with frustration, presumably at how bad this dinner is turning out.

"Must be a circuit breaker," Sam responds from somewhere behind me.

"He's not glowing."

"I know. Hit the lights."

As the lights flip on and Max screams, I smack Sam as hard as I can on the back of his head. As he rubs his head, Mom snatches the mirror from him and asks, "Sam, what has gotten into you tonight?"

Max sighs. "I think I know what's going on here."

"You do?" Edgar questions, sounding apprehensive.

"Yeah," Max responds. "I know what you're thinking, Sam, but you're wrong."

Sam glances at the Frog brothers quickly before focusing on Max again, "I am?"

"I'm not trying to replace your father or steal your mother away from you. I would just like to be your friend. That's all." Max's tone is genuine and makes me want to smack Sam again for this conversation even occurring. Max adjusts his suit and buttons up his jacket. "Good night, Lucy."

As he leaves the dining room, Mom quietly says with disappointment coating her words, "Thanks a lot."

Sam at least has the decency to apologize to Mom for ruining her dinner.

When both of the adults leave, Sam looks at the Frog brothers and comments, "Big mistake."

Before Sam can leave, I walk up and grab his arm, holding him in place.

"Big mistake? Sam, what the hell were you three doing? Enough with all of this vampire shit. Don't you see how much you're affecting Mom? Huh?"

Sam pulls his arm out of my grip. "You and Mike are shitsucking creatures of the night. How am I supposed to react? I don't want to lose anyone else!"

"Sam. You're not going to lose me. I'm still the same Kiri as before."

"No, you're not. But you can be. So leave me alone and let me protect my family."

He walks away, leaving me in the dining room with the Frog brothers. I turn around and glare at the two of them.

"You two need to stay away from my family."

"Whatever, bloodsucker," Alan responds before the two brothers follow Sam to wherever he went.

I roll my eyes then begin to clean up the remnants of the failed dinner. Mom comes back in a few minutes later and silently begins to clean up as well.

"I'm sorry, Mom," I say as clean, not looking up at her.

"You kids have made this summer hell for me," Mom responds. "I wanted one good night. One night where I could enjoy a nice dinner with my kids and my... my friend and I couldn't even have that. Is it you kids' mission to make sure I stay single?"

I shake my head, looking up at her. "No, it's not. Well, not mine, at least. I want you to be happy. And if that means dating, then I'm all for it. I really don't know what's going on with Mike and Sam, though."

Mom sighs. "I don't know either."

Walking over, I hug her. "Hopefully we can figure it out and fix it soon. I miss being a family."

Mom smiles and hugs me back. "I hope we can." Pulling away, she fixes a bit of my hair. "Didn't you say you had plans for after the dinner?"

I nod. "Yep. I can cancel them if you need help here, though."

"No, you go. I don't want to ruin your fun."

"Okay. I love you."

"Love you, too, Moon."

Walking out of the dining room and jog up the stairs to my room, grabbing my boots and my wallet. I slip on a jacket and then go back downstairs, all while lost in thought.

Sam's words resonate in my head, making me question things. Sure, I felt like I belonged with the Lost Boys, but does being with them mean losing my family? When I made my decision about turning, I was only thinking in the moment, and that only included the Lost Boys and Angel. But was my decision too quick? Should I have thought it over more? Did I really want to live forever, knowing that the family that I love was going to die at some point?
