Chapter Fourteen
Finally… we meet again
A week had passed.
The morning that woke me up was rainy. The city had never been a good view during rainy days unlike in the province. I could not appreciate the emotions of the rain because the traffic was bothering me more. I wanted to look at my window and appreciate the dripping of water from the leaves and the falling of raindrops on the grasses but I saw floating trashes from outside the subdivision. I just closed my curtain and started my day as I played in my mind the songs that we would be playing for our concert later. Minutes passed and I heard a ring on the doorbell.
Jaime came, his jacket wet. I invited him to the veranda as the maid served us hot coffee for the cold afternoon.
“Sorry for the delay, Sir,” he apologized. I wanted to rage. A weeks passed and I heard nothing from him but “I’m doing my best, Sir” or “There was a problem, Sir.” But then he said, “I just assured that I will be giving you everything you need once I face you, Sir Maisen. And I have everything you need now.” I leaned back on my seat as I waited for him to say more. “I first saw her when I first called you. That was the time that she was at the hospital and she was with two adults, probably her parents. They have two big bags with them that’s why I I had this in mind that she’s a patient.”
“But when I checked the whole hospital she’s not there!” I could still remember how I went back to our hospital everyday and checked if someone whose name was Betty was admitted. But she was not there.
“Few minutes after her parents went out,” he continued. “she went out, too. I tried to follow her and just walked behind her so it would not be difficult for me to do that. Just then that I found out that I left my phone in the car because I was in a hurry. I did not go back to get it because I might lose her from my sight. That’s why I could not call you, Sir. Then she went to the mall… And… And—”
I leaned forward on my seat and asked him, “What?”
“Sir, is…” Jaime paused, trying to locate the words. “Is she really your fiancée?”
“Why?” I asked. “Don’t we look like couples to your eyes?”
“Not that, Sir. It’s just that—” He paused for a while. “Sir, Maisen, don’t be mad—”
“Stop that purity act and just tell me.” I drank my hot coffee. My knees were shaking.
“A guy came, and then… He put his arms on her shoul… ders.” His voice was almost disappearing as he finished his sentence.
I almost surged on his face the hot coffee in my mouth. “What did you say?” I asked again, hoping that what I heard was not true.
“They were very close to each other, Sir. I thought at first that you were the guy because you had the same height. But then, it’s not you. They were walking happily, laughing freely and just… sweet.”
I bit my lower lip as my eyes drew into two thin lines. The more he said what they were doing, the more my my eyes became thinner. I was jealous. How could that happen? I could not just believe it! “Are you sure that it’s her?” He nodded. I got the flower vase in the table between us and pointed it to his face. I shook it in front of him until the flowers touched his nose. “Don’t tell me you did nothing?”
