Chapter Twelve

Searching the world to find you

“Sir, is this how she looks like?”

Jaime, the private investigator, raised the drawing pad in his hands and showed me the result of his sketch. And then there she was, Betty. Looking dazzling even in charcoal. Her eyes were exactly oriental, her lips in perfect figure, her face glowed. I could not take my eyes off that drawing. It was like she was really in front of, me, smiling, staring at my eyes.

“She’s very beautiful, right?” I smiled at the drawing.

“Sir, actually, I think I already saw her. In your hospital. My daughter is a nurse there that’s why I usually go there. And I saw her several times, if she really is that girl who I always see.”

            “Hospital where?” I asked curiously.

“At the capital, Sir. My daughter works at your Cancer Institute. I just don’t know if this girl is there or on some other wards.”

I leaned forward, pushing myself closer to him. “What is she doing there? Is she sick?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know, Sir. But let me find out.”

I nodded, hoping that she was just visiting someone. I wanted us to meet beautifully— the weather was fine and both of us were both doing fine, only that something was missing: each other. “Thank you. Please move as fast as possible. You have no idea how hard it is to have not enough sleep, how hard it is to eat… Even taking a bath becomes hard also! So please…”

He covered his mouth with the back of his hand, afraid that I might see him laugh. “Sir, if you don’t mind, how are you related to her?”

“She’s my fiancée,” I answered smiling from ear-to-ear. “Tell me every information about her that you would collate. And please make sure that no man will touch her. Understood?”

He nodded, still laughing silently. After discussing about things, I got him off the hook. I was left beaming for myself. Few more hours and I would be meeting her again. Just few more hours. Patience, Maisen. Patience. I was imagining things that could happen once Betty and I met again when Terrence came. He sat across me and handed me a glass of wine.

“Maisen, what happened?” he asked before he drank his. Terrence had the contact with the investigator and he knew a lot of them because his foster father was a former government official and security agent.

“He draws very well,” I smiled mischievously. “Thank you, dude.”

He just nodded and poured wine on our now empty glasses. “We are invited to perform on Avril’s wedding reception. It’s a midnight party. And he also requested a song for us to sing.”

“Really? What song, then?” I asked.

            “I Have Found You.”

“Seriously?” I asked and Terrence just raised his eyebrows twice. “That song was very dramatic. He just got married and he wants to listen to a song for the broken-hearted? During his wedding reception? Seriously!” I drank my wine with one shot. I could not imagine us performing a sad song that had the heart-breaking line, ‘that’s when I proved that the saddest day was the day I have found you’ during a friend’s wedding. “And,” I added. “Avril really loves us, doesn’t he? He even requested an original song when in fact we can do song covers.”
