Chapter Three
Too much fame means missing freedom
“Great job, guys!”
Heart rounded the stage as she asked for a high five from each of us. I took the bass guitar off my shoulders and put in on the guitar rack at the corner. We were all smirking like freaks. No one was speaking yet there was this strong vibe. We just got through practicing our new song and in no time now, Kyela Marjorene would be back on track.
“Should we celebrate?” Heart, our drummer, put her arms on my shoulders and on Violet’s. “I know a good place!”
“I’m sorry to interrupt you.”
We all glanced at the side of the stage and there stood the President of the student council of the New Empire University, Harmonica Archiva.
“Hey, Harmony!” I smiled when I saw her. Everyone greeted her, except Terrence of course. Our vocalist had been crushing on her for who knows how many years and seeing her stood only a few feet away from him was enough to knock him down.
“I’m so sorry to interrupt you, but Maisen,” she glanced at me. “There is...” She paused for a while as if catching the best words to make her sentence more acceptable. “something you should see.”
Facing her with my eyebrows meeting, I asked, “What is it?”
She did not answer and only gave me an apologetic smile. I followed Harmony as she walked out of the concert hall. She was not saying anything as we walked side-by-side; she just stood beside me, eyes on our way. My heart started to beat fast. I did not know what she was up to. And it somehow chilled my insides.
“Hey there, boy.” I suddenly lost track when a girl in her uniform grabbed my collar and hugged me. “Why are you not calling me? I waited last night, and last last night, and last last last night, but there was no Maisen. You said you would call me, right?”
“Ah...” I tried to find the right words to answer. Truthfully, I did not remember who she was. There was no single idea that would enter my head. Was she a girl from the bar? From a friend’s party? From the neighborhood? Or just somebody? “I... I...”
“Maisen!”
I turned my head only to see another girl in the same uniform called me. I glanced on my side and saw Harmony leaning her back on the post. She glanced at me, shrugged her shoulders, then looked away.
“My Dad will be throwing out a party by the end of the week. Sunday. Are you in?”
I smiled at Arianne Sy without even knowing what to say. What should I? Should I tell her I was busy? I had practice? How about a family gathering? Or a friend get-together? A peace offering mass? Or my pet’s birthday? What should I say!
“Silence means yes,” Arianne leaned on me and gave me a peck before she left saying, “I will wait for ya!”
I glanced back to the girl who was talked to me first. My eyes widened and I just stood there frozen when she wiped something from her face. I swear I saw her cried! She just stared at me like she was Medusa and her stares would make me turn into a stone. Then, she left without saying anything.
“How hard it is to have many hearts!” Harmony smiled as she started walking away. I followed her and again, walked by her side. There was nothing but silence as we walk, until we reached our destination. And my jaws dropped with what I saw
