Red had invited me to her house, but I declined. Not because I didn't want to go, but because I didn't feel comfortable sitting there smiling in her face, when I had kissed her boyfriend- and enjoyed it. So later that day, when she unexpectedly showed up at my house, I was lost for words.
“So did you talk to him then?”
“Yeah,” I answered, trying not to give too much away.
“What did he say?”
“He said- actually it doesn’t matter what he said. The important thing is, he's just as scared as you.”
“Did he say something bad?” She asked ignoring me.
“No.” I hesitated.
“Oh My Gosh!” She exaggerated. “He doesn’t want to have anything to with me and the baby does he?” I said nothing. “I'm right, init?”
“He didn't say that, he’s just worried that he won’t be able to give you and the baby what you need.”
She sighed. “Jessie this whole experience has made me realise how much I have to grow up. If Chris can’t grow up fast enough, then there's no point in him being involved.”
“But you know that he will be involved, no matter what. Just give him time.” I tried to reason with her.
“No!” I was slightly taken back by her outburst. “I've had enough of waiting around for him. I have to go through this on my own. I don't want to do it on my own; I shouldn’t have to do it on my own.”
“Red he said that you didn't give him a chance to say how he felt about the situation.”
“What is there to say? I'm pregnant with his child; we’re having a baby, end of.”
“He also said that you didn't give him a chance to tell his mum.”
“Because he was prolonging the process.”
“Okay so this might sound a little hypocritical coming from me, but I think you're being selfish.”
“They say it takes one to know one.” She looked at me strangely before saying, “You're the wrong person to be talking to about this. You're Chris’ friend so it’s your duty to take his side.”
“Red, I'm your friend too.”
“Yeah but you and Chris have a stronger relationship.” I sighed, beginning to feel guilty. “Your opinion is biased.” I rolled my eyes. “You two suit more than me and him.” My eyes widened and I had to force them to go back to it original state. “It’s true. You understand each other more. You know each other better. You're a perfect match.”
I looked down, no longer able to look in her eyes. I said nothing mostly because I though it was true. We were a perfect match. But I wouldn't do anything about it because he was my best friend and he had a girlfriend, who was also my friend who was pregnant with his baby.
“Don't think like that. You're carrying his baby. That must count for something.” I tried to console her.
“I doubt it, he still ignoring me. Even after you spoke to him he still doesn’t want to talk to me.”
“He’s just trying to work out what to say to you. He doesn’t cope well under pressure.”
“Stop it!”
“Stop what?”
“You're making excuses for him.”
“I can’t help it.”
“I know.”
“Anyway, let’s not talk about that idiot.” She swiftly changed the subject. I forced a laugh, as did she. “Do you think I’m having a boy or a girl?” She asked, stroking her small bump. I twisted my lip in thought.
