“Do you want me to do that for you?” I asked my cousin Cyan, as she struggled to mix her hair dye. I was at my Auntie Jennifer’s house, chilling.
“No Jessie, I can do it myself.” She answered with a slight bit of irritation in her voice. I screwed her.
“I was only asking gosh.” She sighed.
“Fine what’s in it for you?” I smiled, which quickly formed into a massive grin.
“I thought you would never ask. Well, I'm going out tomorrow and I need some money, say about twenty perhaps. I’ll even wash out the dye afterwards. What do you say?” I said in a slightly patronising voice. She kissed her teeth.
“Fine, whatever.” I took the box from her and got to work.
Soon all her dark brown hairs were gone and replaced by a fiery bronze.
“Tadaaah!” I waved my hands either side of her head, as she looked in the mirror.
“Thanks Jessie. You did good.” She smiled, stroking and admiring my good work.
“So how about that £30 then?” she looked at me through the mirror.
“I thought it was £20?”
“Yeah but I was thinking, since I did such a good job, you wouldn't mind bumping up the price.” After a while of us bickering about why she should give me £30, she finally gave in.
“You’re one in a million Jess.”
“I know.” I gave a cheeky grin and walked out the house humming along to price tags.
It was now Monday and I was back at that hell hole, I'm forced to call school. However today was significant, because it was Magnificent Monday, as I like to call it. I love watching the pain and frustration in people’s eyes because they didn't get enough sleep over the weekend. I said my hello’s to everyone and looked around. Most people had their heads on the table or others slouching in their chairs, complaining about how tired they were. This brought me to happiness and I began to grin hard.
“Jessie, it’s not funny that we don’t get enough sleep. You’re like some next machine that runs off of batteries, aren’t you ever tired?” My dear friend, Red sulked.
“Nope!” I shouted popping the ‘p’, then busted out with laughter. What a lovely day this is going to be. Well until some little girl thought it would be okay to push in the line at lunch. She won’t be doing that for a long time, as I persuaded her to bring a packed lunch.
After school I and Red were on our way home. I decided that I would chill out at hers for a bit.
We got to her door and she retrieved her keys from her bulky school bad. Why she had such a big bag was beyond me. We stepped in side and I took off my shoes and hanged my blazer up.
“Whar gwan Jessie?” that was Red’s brother, Stephan. I just looked at him. “You alright babe? How was your day?”
“Fuck off Stephan. Your balls haven’t finished dropping yet and you wanna move to me.” I kissed my teeth and followed Red to her room. We just jammed for a bit until her mum dropped me home.
Today was the day I go to see my bestest friend in the whole wide world. No not red, she’s my girl best friend. But Christopher, he’s just one in a million. My P.I.C. We did everything together back in the day. I knocked on his front door and the door opened. His mum answered, looking better than ever. “Aunty, you’re looking good.” I briefly hugged her before running up the stairs to Chris’ bedroom. “Jaffa Cakes!” I jumped on him and he caught me.
