I sat beside Chris’ hospital bed watching him sleep. I had been doing this for few days now. The doctors said that he’s okay and that he just needs a few weeks to recover. They had shut his body down so that it could repair itself. I stared at the multiple scars on his face, neck and hands. My Chrissy. I sighed and got up, to leave the room. I waved at Chris’ family and friends, who sat outside of his room. His mum, who had tear stained cheeks and bags under her eyes, came up to me. “Jessie, he’ll get better okay?” I nodded and she pulled me into her chest for a hug. On my way out of the hospital I called Jay.
“Hello.” He answered into the phone.
“Jay, can you come and get me from the hospital please?” I asked in my monotone voice, that I had become accustomed to as I had been using it the last few days.
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a bit. I’ll call you when I'm outside.”
“Okay.” I hanged up the phone and went back in the hospital. I went to one of the small cafes they had. I went up to the till and checked my pockets to see how much change I had. A hot chocolate was definitely in my price range.
“Can I have a hot chocolate please?” The lady nodded with a smile and went to make it. She came back with it and I paid. I sat at a small table in the corner. I rest my head back on the wall. My phone rang in my pocket. I picked up.
“I’m outside.” I hanged up, took my hot chocolate with me and went outside. I opened the car door and got in. “You alright?” Jay asked quietly. I nodded in response. He started up the car and drove home. “Reyes came by looking for you.” I said nothing. “He said you haven’t been answering his calls.” I still said nothing. “You know he actually cares about you init.” I sipped on my hot chocolate and looked out the window. Jay sighed. “Come on Jessie. Don't shut down on everyone again.” He stopped at the traffic light and turned his head to face me. “At least talk to him. He’s willing to be there for you.” The rest of the journey was filled with an intense silence. I know Jay wanted to ask what was wrong, he’d already done so, so had everyone else, I just wouldn't tell them.
I lay on my bed staring up at my ceiling. The only sound made was my light breathing. I licked my lips and closed my eyes. “Jessie.” I turned my head to see Reyes looking at me sympathetically. Mind you, everyone seemed to give me that daunting look. “I just came to see how you are.” He walked towards me with a warm smile. With no expression on my face, I watched as he sat down on my bed cautiously, waiting for me to tell him otherwise. “I haven’t spoken to you in ages,” He adjusted himself into a more comfortable position, so that he was facing me.“It’s weird not speaking to you.” He took my hand and stroked it. Those feelings came back, those feelings that make my heart beat faster. He sighed. “Jessie, please tell me what's wrong, why wont you speak to me?” I looked away from him and resumed staring at the ceiling. He lay down beside me. I could feel him looking at me. He wiped the single tear that fell down my cheek. “Tell me Jessie.” He whispered. I turned to him and gripped him in a tight hug. He hugged me back and let me cry.
-Reyes
She sniffed in my neck as I rubbed her back. Her body was frail and light. You could tell she hadn’t eaten in days. I kissed her forehead and let her cry. She had been silent for days. Seeing her cry was breaking my heart. This had been the first emotion she’d shown in days, other than that dead look she would give whenever she looked at you. I really missed her. Everyone was worried about her, worried that she might be even worse this time, than when her mum died. I continued to rub her back and whisper in her ears.
Her bedroom door opened and Jay poked his head round the door. He came in and sat down on the end of her bed. I could see the tears build up in his eyes that he held back. We watched her cry until she eventually put herself to sleep. Her head lay calmly on my chest.
