It seemed like all of my classes were in slow motion. I could barely focus on any of the lessons. Especially English, the only class I had with John. I would glance back at him and he'd smile, which made me turn around and stare at the teacher. Why John of all of the boys? I mean, George was sweet and funny, Paul was my best friend, and Richa--I mean Ringo--was thoughtful and even kinda cute.
The kid beside me nudged me and I noticed the teacher's eyes were on me. I blinked, "Uh, come again, please?"
The teacher grinned, "I'm glad you could join us, Judith. Now, please pay attention."
"Uh, yes sir," I folded my hands on my desk and received a snicker from behind me. I ignored it and went about doodling in my notes.
The bell finally rang and I gathered my things and waited for John at the doorway. He draped an arm over my shoulder and smiled. It was a friendly gesture, I know, but it was enough to make me blush.
"So we're all going to the drive-in tonight. You're coming, right?" He asked as we got to my locker. He, then, made the mistake of leaning on Nancy's locker.
"Sure, I'll be at Paul's after school, anyway," I leaned up and kissed his cheek, just as Nancy got there to throw a fit.
"Get off of my locker," She growled, stamping her foot.
John obliged with an amused grin playing his lips, "See you later, love."
He bit his lip at me then looked to Nancy. I knew what he was gonna do. I tried not to giggle as I edged him to do it. I started walking away when I heard a smack then Nancy gasp. John ran past me, giggling. I shook my head laughing as I listened to the offended cries of Nancy, "HE JUST SMACKED MY BUTT! JASON! DID YOU SEE THAT?"
I walked out of the school to meet Paul on the stairs. He walked close beside me and looked ahead of us with a pleasant smile on his face.
"What's got you so giddy?" I finally asked as we turned onto our street.
"Well, I'm happy to inform you that I mustered up the courage today to ask Jane to be my girl."
"And?" I smiled. I knew it'd happen!
"And she's now my girl," His smile was a proud one.
We climbed the stairs to his porch and went inside. We tossed our bags on the foot of the stairs and went up to Paul's room. We sat on the bed and talked about school for a while until I finally asked. "So, Geo said you and John were talking about a girl earlier?"
His smile softened a little, "We were and you'll meet her tonight at the drive-in. You'll love her, Jude."
The only word my mouth would let escape was "Oh". I swear a part of me died. So there was a new girl. Guess I had to stick by Geo, because I promised I wouldn't torture myself.
