Later that evening Paul and I met the others at the drive in. George was sitting in on a blanket spread over the grass, shoving handfuls of popcorn into his mouth as he stared at the screen. I glanced around, not seeing John or his new girl anywhere, and sat beside George. I stole some of his popcorn and he laughed. Paul sat on the other side of the blanket with Jane. About a third of the way into the movie another familiar face joined us; Richard--I mean Ringo.
He smiled at me as I patted the spot next to me.
I wanted to talk to him but everytime I'd try George would shush me and return to watching the movie.
"You want to tag along with me to concession?" Ringo asked, standing and offering his hand.
"That's a great idea," I took his hand and he helped me up, but even after I was standing he didn't let go. I didn't mind, of course. Ringo was an escape for me. He was no John, that was for sure, but he was still so sweet and easy to be around. We made our way to the small building and went inside, still hand-in-hand. I pulled him over to the candy and as I looked a thought popped into my mind. "Aren't you and Mo a thing?" I asked, eyeing some gummy worms.
He must have noticed me staring at them, "Excuse me, could I get a cuppa those gummy worms?" He paid for the candy and a soda, handing me the gummy worms. He took a sip of the soda and re-laced his fingers with mine, "No, Mo and I are just good friends."
I tossed a worm into my mouth as we walked back toward the blanket. Two others had joined us. I wasn't too surprised by that, I mean we had quite a few friends and on top of that John was coming with his 'date'. The word made me shiver.
As we got closer the light from the screen illuminated the two new people. Who I saw made my heart stop. I paused and almost dropped the cup of gummy worms.
The new people sitting on the blanket were no other than John and.... Nancy!?
