John was leaning on the fence, just looking around. I couldn't help but notice how much he'd changed. It was a good change. I caught myself smiling and quickly made myself look bored.
"Alright, lets get going then. It's only 3 AM," John said enthusiastically.
My eyes widened at the mention of the time, "3 in the morning, John?"
"I promise I have my reasons, darling. Now come'ed," He grinned and nodded towards a car parked in Paul's driveway. We walked over and he took a stab at being a gentleman, opening my door for me before he climbed in and started the car. As he pulled out of the driveway I noticed how clear the sky was. The moon was full and stars dotted the sky, filling it with shapes and pictures for the world to see. It was beautiful.
"Earth to Judith," John laughed, glancing between me and the road.
"Huh?" I looked over at him and gave a grin. He looked so mature.
"I said 'If you don't like coffee, then how does tea sound'."
"Oh, yeah. Tea sounds fantastic right now," I smiled and turned my attention towards the window. "So how far along is Nancy? Is she huge?"
"About 4 months now," His gaze was locked on the road and it looked as though he was grasping the wheel tighter.
"That's nice. When is your wedding?" I asked, only trying to be polite.
"Too soon," He sighed and pulled into the coffee shop.
"What do you mean?" I studied him and he just ignored my question and climbed out. He opened my door and walked me inside. I love the smell of the place, it was mellow.
We went ahead and ordered before seating ourselves. We made small talk as we waited for the tea.
"So you're telling me you and Richard aren't sleeping with each other," John asked after a long discussion about Nancy.
"I swear on my life we're just friends," I laughed, holding my hands up.
"I saw him kiss you earlier, you liar," He grinned, cooly leaning back in his chair.
"So? You and I kissed before too. Does that mean we're sleeping together?" I asked and folded my hands on the table. Then I saw John Lennon do something I've never seen him do. He blushed and lost his cool for a mere second.
"Shut up, Jude," He laughed and looked away, searching for the waitress.
"John, why Nancy? Of all people why her?" I asked, breaking the silence in the cafe.
John sighed and leaned back, regaining his cool, "She came to me and promised a good shag. Said you two were close friends and that you told her to hook up with me. I didn't understand why you were so upset at the drive in, I truly didn't. Then you stopped talking to me, the lads stopped bringing you around. I didn't know what else I could do. I was gonna leave her, you know, but she told me she was having my babies. You can't leave a pregnant woman. You just can't, so I didn't."
I blinked. He was unhappy with his life. I shook my head and laughed a little, "You know, you chose this life, John."
"I did. And I'm sorry. I know you fancied me a while back. You might even fancy me now," He paused there, grinning and winking at me.
I shook my head and giggled, blushing slightly, "No, John."
The waitress brought us out tea and I sipped mine, gazing out the window at the quiet town. John was quiet for a while after that. Until he surprised me by asking something crazy.
"Run away with me."
