What friends are for (Godt)
It was the longest night of my life.
When P’Kim was out of the operation theater after an eight hour surgery, we were all exhausted. He made through the surgery but the next three days were critical. So I guided shaking Copter and sleepy sagging Bas to the waiting area. Only two people can see him at once. So his mom and dad are inside right now. I really thought P’Kim’s father was having a heart attack. But luckily it was just stress.
It was past three in the morning. Bas was sleeping with his head on my chest. He doesn’t want to leave. I guess he was really shaken by what happened to P’Kim. P’Kim had been there for him, always. I remembered how he decked me for sleeping with Bas that day. A faint smile appeared in my face. He has to recover from this. He’s a good person. I looked at Copter sitting next to me, sleeping with his head on my shoulder. He has to recover for this little guy. Otherwise he would go crazy.
I must have dozed off. Someone was shaking me. I opened my eyes with great difficulty. It was P’Tae.
“Nong Godt, wake up” I blinked my eyes. He was leaning down at me with a paper cup.
“P’Tae?, When did you get here?” I asked. I feel heavy because I have both kids glued to my sides.
“Fifteen minutes ago.” He sat down besides me and started shaking Copter. I looked down at Bas’, whose face was crushed to my bicep. I slipped my fingers through his hair.
“Bas?” I whispered. He blinked and opened his eyes.
“What time is it?” He was rubbing his eyes with his balled up hands. I pulled his hands away from his eyes.
“It’s morning.” I checked my watch. “Seven” P’Tee was bringing two plastic cups and handed them to me and Bas.
“Drink up.” He patted Bas’ back.
“Why don’t you three go home and get some sleep?” P’Tae handed the coffee to Copter. He looked so lost my heart went out for him.
“I want to stay with P’Kim.” He mumbled.
“P’Tae and I will stay with him for few hours.” P’Tee touched Copter’s shoulder. “Go home, shower and eat something. After you get a nap, you can come back.” He said kindly. “Oh Bas, your mom sent some clothes for you, in case you want to stay somewhere.” He handed a backpack to Bas.
“Thank you P’Tee” Bas took it and looked up at me. “Can I come with you P? I don’t want to go home and be alone.” I nodded.
“Of course, you can.” I looked at Copter again. When I was away, when my Bas was suffering, P’Kim and Copter took care of him. Now it’s my turn. “Copter, would you like to come with us? You can sleep there?” I asked him.
“I don’t want to intrude P,” he stared down at his fingers intertwined together in his lap. “And I don’t have change of clothes.” He mumbled.
“What do you mean by intrude Copter? Aren’t we friends?” I patted his head. “Lets go home.”
“I have enough clothes here” Bas was rummaging through his bag. “You can have some.” He stood, zipping it up and shouldering it.
“Can I see him for a minute?” Copter was looking up at us pleadingly.
“Come on, I’ll take you.” P’Tee wrapped one arm around him and guided. I turned to P’Tae.
“Where’s Mimi?” I asked finishing my coffee.
“She’s with Bas’ mom. We dropped her off there, on our way.” P’Tae observed my face. “Are you alert enough to drive?”
“Yes P thank you. And P’Kim’ parents?” I asked remembering.
“I sent them home. They were exhausted.” He looked back at where Tee and Copter disappeared. “Keep an eye on Copter, yeah?” he slapped my shoulder. I nodded. When we get home I let Copter shower and change first. I heated the frozen food packets I brought on the way. As usual I don’t have anything in the fridge but drinks, milk and water.
Bas came behind me and wrapped his hands around my middle and pressed his face to my back. It’s his signature cuddle move. I smiled to myself and thought how good it feels to have the one you love next to you. And I felt really sad for Copter again.
“Will P’Kim be alright, P’Godt?” He mumbled face still burryed in my back.
“I really don’t know baby. But we have to keep our faith. We have to believe that he will be fine.”
I held Bas’ hands and turned around. Then I pushed him to a chair and slid the food in front of him. I broke the plastic cutlery packet and handed him the chopsticks and spoon.
“Eat” I urged him.
Copter came out of the shower wearing Bas’ pants and t-shirts.
“Nong, come and eat.” I called him.
“I have no appetite at all.” He sat down and started turning cardboard packet of cutlery between his fingers.
“But you need your strength for tomorrow.” He started to poke at the noodles.
“You and Bas can have the bed. I’ll sleep on the couch.” I stood up.
“I can sleep on the couch P.” Copter mumbled.
“I mean it. Take the bed, get a good rest and then I’ll take you to see P’Kim again.” I said gently and he nodded staring down at his food container.Sometimes when you’re too tired and want to sleep so badly, sleep don’t come at all. I remembered my sleep deprived days and addiction and shuddered a little. What I learned from all this is that this life you have is very precious. You cannot just for grant it, because next minute you might be saying goodbye to life.
So appreciate what you have. Live everyday like your last day. Laugh giddily, kiss slowly and live happily.
I woke up to a warm body curled up on my chest. I touched blindly and my fingers found soft hair and my nose found the sweetest smell. Bas, he’s sleeping on me.I looked at the bed. Copter is still in deep sleep. I stared to run my fingers through his hair. He sighed and cuddled more comfortably.
“What are you doing here?” I pressed my lips to his head.
“I wanna be close to you.” He mumbled to my chest. I wrapped my arms around him. He tugged the neck of my shirt and pressed a kiss to my collarbone. “I love you P” He whispered and burryed his face tighly in my chest.
“I love you baby.” I mumbled to his hair.
