I thought about the words from the tape for a couple of days while I decided what to do next. First, I searched for that screwdriver and the bobby pins, and with a bit of spelunking, I found them in an old and rusted toolbox, which also contained a couple of tool which were also rusted. I also had some practice with that hacking program on my Pipboy, and with a lot of practice, I was able to hack a basic terminal with ease. I took care of my hip so I could walk on it. But while I did my preparations, The Overseer and Beatrice would come down on me harder, like they knew my plan. I ignored it and for one more night, I over went my plan one more time before I slept my last night in that underground prison. I woke up. I felt a bit nervous. "What if I got caught, or worse?" I said with a bit of worry. I didn't care, I was gonna get out. It was about 8 o'clock, according to the Pipboy, so I grabbed some Med-X, some Stimpaks, my screwdriver and bobby pins, and a pistol I stole from the guards quarters, in case of any interruptions during my escape. I left my room and looked one more time at the room I grew up in my whole life. Beatrice was sitting in the living room, reading a book about children and discipline. I walked past, but she got up and stopped in front of the doorway. "Where are you going, remember your grounded, so no leaving your room. "I need to see my teacher about my test" I said. "Then I'm coming too". Shit. She's delaying my plan, "Fine, but what do you expect?" I questioned. "I want to talk to him as well, about your behaviour in class". Great. I walked out and made my way to the classroom. I pretended to cough with a rasp and said "I need a drink from the bubbler". She sighed like always and kept walking. I walked around the corner and started to jog down the hall to the Overseer's Office. But while I ran, I thought about consequences again and stopped. "Maybe I should go back, but this is what my parents wanted, so screw it". I walked a bit and I finally found the door, and started the process of cracking the lock. With a few twists of the hand, it clicked and the door opened. I ran in and went to the terminal, but while closing the door behind me, a sharp siren sounded through the intercom. Then a voice fizzled in through the static. "Mikayl, you can't escape, just give up, and we won't hurt you... much". Prick. I shot the door console and ran to the terminal and started to hack in. I got in and there were some files on weird civilian behaviour, including me, so I copied them and opened a secret passage under the desk. I started my descent while the guards busted through the door and fired some shots, so I fired back, but in my defensive haste, I hit the chief in the shoulder. When the passage closed, I ran through the tunnel until I came to a console that opened the wall in front of me, and behind it was the prize of all my preparations and risks. The door. I'd never see it before, but it felt familiar. I ran to the controls for the door and saw three buttons. Open, close and lock. "Holy shit, they'd lock us in if they liked". I pressed open and it started its process of grinding but precious freedom. The door was moved out of the way and it made a screeching, grinding noise. I cupped my hands over my ears, and watched. I saw it. Sunlight. It hit my skin like a flow of lava, but it felt so good. I breathed in the air that I had never even heard if. I stepped onto the burnt up and dry soil at my feet. I turned while the door sealed my past behind me forever. Before I could make a plan, gunshots could be heard nearby. I looked down the hill, and that moment, right there and then, was when my journey really began.
Thank you all for reading my book so far, I guarantee that I'll try to make it as entertaining as I can for now on, so let it begin.
