Water rushed by her snout, apparently shoving her away from the little hut of her mother. She cried out, trying to struggle back, but the current was stronger than ever before. It continued to push on, shoving her out to sea.
After a moment of struggle, she saw the flash of luminescent stripes of her mother, and the curly, swirling stripes of a hesitant Kelp, stubbornly helping look for the disappearing dragonet.
I could help them. She realized, an idea forming in her head. She changed her scales to an alarming orange, speckled with yellow. Before her idea could work, the stripes blinked out of view. The hunt was over. They had given up.
Her head bashed into a rock, and her gills scraped painfully against it. Her gills. She had to get out from under the water. She had to get air as soon as possible. Shoving herself upwards, she saw dark shapes with fins swimming towards her. She read enough scrolls to know they were sharks, coming for her blood. The water turned lighter as she swam up. Air! Sky! Sun!
Determined, she broke free of the water and the sharks, and zipped into the sky just as a hollow eye glared up at her and sharp teeth snapped. Panting, she circled the sky, and to her relief, saw a beach in the distance. In a matter of minutes, she was there, panting and shaking wet sand of her wings.
This wasn't any beach. The muddy prints that led to the edge of the sand told her where she was. Turning her green and blue head to the swamp, she saw the thin outline of trees.
I could go home now. Right now. I could dash back into the trees. Maybe my father would be there, looking for me. The rainforest is close enough, her mind trilled.
No. Her father knew her well. He would know she would keep trudging to the water. He would know she would find her mother if that was what she came for. He would at least know she wouldn't go back to the rainforest for no reason.
He was still out there somewhere, searching for her. That meant...if she returned home, she would return without her father. Also, the rainforest dragons would have a lot of questions about where she went. She couldn't bring herself to tell them that she had gone to the Sea Kingdom. They were at war. She'd seem like a traitor.
Also, her mother was probably desperately searching for her in the depths of the sea. If she just returned to the forest home she knew best, her mother wouldn't know if she was alright. She had to find her father, and then bring him to her mother. Maybe she could live in the ocean if she could find him in time.
If only it were that easy.
Ivy had walked and flew, flew and walked. After what seemed to be an hour, she pulled her wings inwards and landed on the soft grass. When she glanced up, tall looming peaks watched her from the horizon. Pale green fear rippled across her entire body. The Sky Kingdom was waiting for her.
