Slug let out a cry of disbelief. He ran over, as if to pick Ooze's head out of the wet mud, but saw her and flinched back. She felt a violent rage sparking up under her scales, but then realized what she had just done and winced. She wasn't that kind of dragon! She didn't kill for fun!
"Why did you do that?! He didn't even attack you!" Slug cried. She forced the blue-grey and pale green out of her scales, and tried to answer calmly.
"He was going to. He wanted to turn me in to your queen. Do you know what would even happen if he did that? I could die. It was just self defense." She held her voice, not letting it shake. She was surprised when Slug started to growl.
"Don't you dare call it that! You know it wasn't self defense. He didn't turn you in. You escaped. You vanished. He couldn't have found you! If you just left, he wouldn't have ever turned you in. You could just walk right out of the mud kingdom! He wouldn't want to attack you if you act that vicious. We'd let you leave! You heard us say that! You killed a dragon for no reason!" His words stung, but she wouldn't admit that. He looked like he was about to attack. Surely, if he charged forward, his tail was small enough for her to grab it and fling him over. It would be an easy win.
No! She wasn't that kind of dragon. What was she doing, assessing him as if he was a crab she wanted to catch for dinner? She held his steady glare. "He deserved this. He charred my wings. I can't fly." She nodded to the ash slipping off of them.
He growled. "Nothing is equal to death. Does he deserve to die because you got a scrape and a bruise? He can't think or prey to the good spirits ever again. You took his life all because you can't fly? No scar is equal to death. We don't even know if your wings won't just grow back!" He added, hissing. She lashed her tail.
"That's not fair. He deserved this."
"You are letting a dragon die because you want revenge. Go. Just leave. Make your scales bright yellow and hot pink and march right to wherever you were going. Nobody will attack you. I'm worried enough that you'll come and kill me, too." He spread his wings, and took to the sky, not saying another word.
She did just that, and started to walk back. Her scales were black, green, and blue. She didn't care if a Mudwing saw her. She would just camouflage her scales and run away. She felt hurt enough that she had the guts to kill a dragon. She didn't need to attack another.
A couple times, she saw Slug hiding in the bushes and watching her go. She would have done the same. After all, who wouldn't escort a killer out of their home?
Her spirit was lifting, however. Soon, she would be out of Mudwing territory. She could find her dad, and her mom, and take them both back to the rainforest where they could live in peace forever. No more dragons would die. Maybe her mom would look a little strange, but then they could just all change their scales to look like her, and they could be one harmonized family.
If only she didn't doubt her skills on finding her lost mother in the giant ocean.
