Because I Had You - Shawn Mendes
Zach:"You're a really cool dude," Loren said with a smile on her face.
"And you are a really cool girl," I said with a chuckle.
She sat in the passenger's seat of my car. Nerah's seat. I sighed reminiscing all of the good times in this car.
"Are you okay?"
"Huh?" I looked up and saw Loren.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just got lost in thought, sorry." She laughed lightly.
"It's fine." She smiled and I found myself getting lost in her ocean blue eyes. "Do you want to hang out sometime?"
"Yeah," I said with a smile.
We went for a little drive around the city after everyone left her birthday party. Loren was different from Nerah. She was more confident, happier, unlike Nerah. And maybe, just maybe, she was the one to make me better.
A broken person can't fix another broken person.
And with Nerah, I was busy helping her and not helping myself. Loren would be just the right person to help me. Maybe that's why Nerah was always unhappy. I wasn't fit to heal her, never was, never will be.
I looked up at Loren and smiled.
"So..." she said softly while sinking into the chair.
"So..." We both laughed and she smiled a bright smile.
"You and Nerah."
"We broke up," I said quickly.
"Yeah, but why?" She asked. "You guys had something special. This was her seat, right?"
I looked at the little stain on the side of the seat which was from the day that I tickled Nerah and she spilled her sweet and sour onto the seat. I smiled.
"Yeah, it was."
"You can tell me what happened." I felt my heart burst.
"Nerah was a broken girl. We dated for 2 years and throughout those 2 years, she was very depressed and sad. At one point in our relationship, I almost died with her because of how much I loved her. We were always risking everything to be together and we hid our relationship from our closest friends and family. And after an argument we had last week I realized that I wasn't fit to take of someone as broken as she was and that broke me. I just needed time away to figure out my life and someone who could fix this emptiness and broken feeling."
"I'm sorry," she said softly.
"No, it's fine." I smiled and wiped a tear.
"What's this?" She asked touching the scar on my arm. I realized that the whole time we were talking, I was touching it.
"This is from the day I saved Nerah and almost died..."
Chills ran up my spine as she ran her small baby pink manicured pinky along the scar. She stared at it and pressed her thumb against it. She did that for a few seconds.
"I've been sad in my life, but never this sad. I wish I understood, I'm sorry," she said softly not moving her eyes from the scar.
"It's fine."
"You're a good guy, Zach."
"If you knew who I really was, you wouldn't say that," I said softly. She looked up at me.
"What?"
"My past wasn't exactly the brightest or the best. Nerah changed me and made me better. That's why I'm here, living my dream."
