I felt my phone vibrate in my hand as I sank down further into the brown leather couch.
An email, from a person I hadn't seen in a while.
Hey James, It's Mads, from high school.
I was wondering if I could come over for lunch sometime this week, like tomorrow?
I'd love to see you again.
Toodles!
I remember typing out a quick response, a "sure, tomorrow's fine. come at noon" response with our address next to it.
"Hey Hals?" I called out, to the silhouette of my wife in the dining room. "I'm having my friend over for lunch tomorrow. Can you make it?"
She sighed. "Sorry, love. My parents are taking me to my little cousin's birthday party, and I haven't seen her in forever. Just don't tear down the house."
She planted a kiss on my head and headed off to work.
"I love you," I whispered after her, as she waved into the windows while getting into her car.
The hours drifted by when Hailey was gone.
They were always too long, and I started to think to myself, "How could I survive without her?"
A day apart from her was torture, but a torture I could endure.
I shut off my phone and turned on the piano.
