Ten or so minutes later, Hailey's parents came over, bearing a few wedding gifts. I smiled awkwardly at them, not sure what to say, and "thank you for letting me marry your only daughter" seemed a bit inappropriate.
Instead, Hailey's dad smiled and hugged me, and with tears eyes, whispered "I wouldn't have her marry anyone else in the whole world."
Next was Hailey's mom, who thanked me for loving her, which i didn't really understand. Instead, I should've thanked them for producing such a wonderful daughter.
Hailey pulled out two rings, which were cheap and steel, shaped into a pattern of infinity signs almost.
She whispered an "I love you" and slipped the ring onto my finger.
I shouted "WAIT" and ran out.
I shit you not, I walked back in again with Harry the Lawnmower and wet feet because of all of the snow.
When Hailey started laughing, I murmured "what? my ex should be here for my wedding!"
So, with stifling laughter, I slipped the ring onto Hailey's finger and kissed her harder than ever before.
And with a shout of "GET A ROOM," Hailey's parents left.
"I heard from Mr. and Mrs. Smith you were getting married."
I turned to see my mother, gray streaks in her hair, more wrinkled than before. She was clunking off the snow that stuck to the bottom of her shoes.
"Mom, we got married. You can't do anything about it. I love her, she loves me, and if you can't just freaking accept that, then leave me alone."
She started to cry. "It's not HUMAN, Jaimie! This thing you're doing, it's monstrous!!! How can I accept that my daughter, is a- a GAY?!?"
My mom said "gay" with such vigor that it set me over the top.
"GET OUT!"
"Jaimie, stop this."
"Katherine Williams, I swear to god if you do not get out of this house now I will call the police."
She left without another word.
